What is the purpose of that "mid-section" that can be seen in picture #5? Does it have the same purpose as a whip strut only longer?

I was wondering the same thing. At first I thought it was a jig to keep the hole-saw in line but it says the the bottom was recessed for it and it's bolted in.

some people cover the prop shatft like that all the way to the strut in an idea of it being more hydrodynamic.

Interesting, I thought anything with a larger diameter would increase drag. Don't some of the SS use a 7/8" shaft to decrease drag or do they use it for a different reason?

I always thought (maybe wrongfully) that it was for less reciprocating weight...?
