There was a great story on one of the news channels on the dismantling of ships. Was an interesting documentary.

Most of it get scrapped or are they able to re-use some parts in new builds?

It doesn't make sense why they would beach a perfectly good ship....it obviously floats and runs. What is it worth scrapped? Seems to me someone would buy it if it is running.

That ship is probably 30+ yrs old. Maybe it's reached its in service life expectancy.

Just because it floats and runs doesn't make it perfectly good. How is the hull and bulkheads? Are the systems in good order? Could you imagine rewiring something like that? How many repairs has it had and can it survive rough seas?
