World Outboard Championships. That was a $25,000 race back in the 60s and 70s, sponsored by Robert McCulloch. Winner also got a residential lot in Havasu too. Only boat race I know of that had a right hand turn to go around what was then the peninsula, to Havasu Landing and back to the Nautical.
Carbon is getting wood just looking at that poster.

Damn, when did the numbers start to drop? That looks like some serious deck to deck racing.

There was over a 100 entries in the 1965 Parker 9 hour and it remained in that area until about 1973 when the oil crisis hit, and it never fully recovered. The race was shortened to 6 hours, and it just kept slipping in numbers.
The World Outboard Championships died when Robert McCulloch did. Not quite as many boats but close, and the race itself ran two days.
