When we went we stayed at the Sheraton Kaanapali, we loved it.

My best friends fiance works front desk there...Looks like a great hotel as well.

We rented a furnished condo in Kihea. We drove north or south to see the various places. Its not ritzy there really, but it made for a great home base location. If you are looking for a higher end resort I would go to one of the other areas.

Napili Bay is our favorite. Reef protected great beach. View from Condo 209 2nd Floor corner unit.

Wow! Great info!
To be a bit more specific, we liked Kaanapali for our family as it was close to other things to do.
That said, we don't mind driving a bit, so somewhere off the beaten path would be great. The resort and spa thing is cool for the wife and I to get a massage and kick back. The convenience of easy access to snorkel gear was cool also.
Our budget is flexible.So many boats...so little time.
