Base is bolted to the balancer and spins the pump shaft with the motor. The polished arm comes off the block and holds the body keeping it from turning. I know some v drive purists will have a problem with it but mechanically it should work fine. Volvo, many ski boats, and most diesels run this same setup. Motor was originally destined for a jet boat so no cam drive was used. This was the easier cheaper route.
