Marine Mechanic in the Rancho/Upland/Ontario area
Can anyone recommend a good marine mechanic in this area?
Need help doing a simple tune up and getting the boat running.
I replaced all fuel lines, had the carb rebuild and put in a fresh set of batteries and I can not get it to turn over. It wants to but does not fire. I tried it three times and on the third, there was a loud noise I can describe as a back fire. I swear it sounded like someone shot a 357 behind the boat.
Anyways, I do not want to damage anything further in case it was not a back fire and so I am looking for a place to take it into.
I should note I took the distributor off with spark plug wires and I have it wired in this order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Yes I am an Amateur lol

Did you take the whole distributor off or just the cap and wires, or just the wires off the cap? Sounds like your timing is off. I would bet you have the cap mis wired or the timing is too retarded if you actually took the dist out of the motor.

Im a winner and took the whole shaft out of the engine. I see that the distributor only fits in 1 way so I placed it in and have it sitting flush. So is the timing off because I took the entire shaft out?

We have several local Marine shops in the area you can refer to the advertisers section for contact and phone number. Good luck and I'm sure someone will chime in, but give them a call.

If the distributor is turned at all, even a tiny bit, the timing is off and should be set with a light. How big is the boat? I don't normally like running engines here since I am in a residential neighborhood, but am right off the 210 freeway at the San Dimas/Glendora border, might be able to fix it up pretty quick.

It is a 19ft boat on a double decker trailer (waverunner on top of course)
Be great if you could fix it!

Timing may be 180 out. The distributor actually drops in two ways and it could have turned 180 degrees while you had it out. It is possible that it is in close to right and still backfired but I'm guessing it is off by a lot. I would love to help but I realize Valencia is a bit of a drive for you. You are welcome to give me a call and I can walk you through it.

Big shout out and thanks to Barry (obnoxious001) for helping me out last night!
As an amateur, I had no idea how much goes on in the engine area if you will.
Thanks again!
