That's a fair price. Material, machine, heat treat, broach, tooling, fixtures for 2 pcs would be about $1500 total on a good day.
Snap-on made 3000 pcs to get that price at 100 each.
I won't fire up a machine for less than a grand :D

Snap on uses a forging die to create the rough shape and the finished internal spines and square end drive. To make the dies is very expensive so to do a small run of parts the internal profiles need to be broached. Broaching is a process to cut those sharp internals.

Since that is a cutaway, is the broach basically a male piece with splines being pushed through a female piece? Thanks for the vid, this is interesting for me!
