I will always recommend a Boston terrier if you are looking for a dog under 25lbs.

There smart athletic and very sweet and loving.....ours loves the water

They also don't bark or shed much.

They are good with the horses, herd the cats in the house, and tolerate water well. Best of all, they are excellent travel companions. In fact, I found our last Cowdog sitting on a center median of a busy, major street. I stopped in traffic, opened the door, told him to jump in and up he came...and has been with us every since. We take him everywhere we go.

Heelers are great mid size sturdy dogs.

I have been around a couple that were a little moody and aggressive but the others have been good working dogs.
