I'm surprised that computer isn't hooked to a pterodactyl that pecks out the picture on a tablet of rock.

Well, that's the problem. Your computer was made before 16:9 monitors were the norm. You might try making sure your video card's driver are completely up to date or you just need to install a new video card. You can pick something up from newegg for less than $40 that will work fine. I would guess from the age you're going to need an AGP card.
