For the past 30 years, we have always had a fairly quiet Christmas at home with enchiladas on Christmas Eve and a traditional meal on Christmas Day.

This year, however, my (now very small) family will be spending the Christmas holidays in Lake Tahoe. Not sure yet on the food, but the traditional meal will not be served.

Tahoe's probably not a big deal for you Cali folks....but we are all from Texas, so it's a major shift.
Sounds perfect. Tahoe is absolutely beautiful in the winter!!! Every year we talk about spending the holidays up there. We only live 96 miles away and still haven't done.

Harvey's Casino has a restaurant on the top floor of the hotel. The view of Lake Tahoe from up there is breath taking...

Holy shit!! You look like a cross between the actor that played kringle in the orignial miracle on 34th st movie with Maureen ohara and the grand pa scientist guy in jurassic park.

btw. I dont holiday! I do merry christmas!

I dont celebrate with my dads side anymore. After gma died 20 yrs ago it all kinda fell apart. My aunts get togethrr still but we never get invites so we just brush it off. That was the xmas eve thing for me as a kid. Now its xmas eve with the wifes fam. Tamales, turkey, ham, and all the traditional mexican and american fixings and the worlds most horrible pumpkin pies!

The gift exchange with her fam SUCKS!! There is a bagillion people in her family and they don't do any5hing till exactly midnight!

Prior to that at about 1115 they all sit in silence while someone does the entire rosary in spanish. (Shoot me status) then at 12 exactly everyone hugs everyone for 30 min the one person plays santa in a horrible 30 yr old outfit and he hands out one present at a time. They call your name and u have to say ho ho ho before he will give it to you. They do this one at a time! The next gift isnt called out till the preceding gift has been opened and shown to the crowd! (More shoot me status stuff) the amount of people involved with this can make it last till 3 to 4 in the morning and we still need to drive home!

Ain't nobody got time fo dat!

Xmas morning we go to my moms side around 1 and have a quite linner, open gifts, and play a game of some sort with a lil drinkin. that ends around 6 and xmas is over. I cant stand going to the wifes side. However, heavy drinking makes is tolerable.

If we ski this year, it'll probably only be 1 or 2 days. We went to Tahoe last year...but 2 weeks before Christmas and skied for 3 days. Enjoyed Heavenly...it was...well...heavenly. Also enjoyed the Himmel Haus across the street (German style restaurant with some great German beer on tap). Sadly, though...at only 30 years old I have a horrible knee - not sure I'm confident enough to push it as hard again this year.

It sure is beautiful. So...my sister-in-law and her husband have been renting a cabin at Zephyr Point for many years. We went last year with them, but it was 2 weeks before Christmas. Absolutely beautiful. We decided to spend Christmas there this year after losing some family that makes a Christmas at home seem somewhat sad. Invited my mom...who surprisingly happily agreed to come. We'll be there for a week.

Another change is...this year we will be driving up from Lubbock, TX - we're going to leave a few days early and make a mini-vacation out of the drive also. We'll be within 100 miles of Havasu, so I'm sure we're going to have to stop there. Hope it'll be as fun as it sounds.

Do you usually celebrate Xmas at the river? What are you guys gonna do if you're not at the river?

We're pretty traditional with turkey and fixings for Xmas dinner.. Usually Chicken Divan for Xmas eve.

    What's Chicken Divan?

Xmas Day Mom's side of the family. However this year may be different as no one is talking. My brother comes out with his family and my cousin from st. Louis is coming out as well. This will be interesting to say the least how we are going to ALL get together under one roof. We usually have prime rib dinner and all the fixins! If WMC could have it his way we would ditch both sides and head to the river. But unfortunately he will not get his way this year. We are staying home and figuring out how to all get together civily.

    Merry Christmas!
Family…can't get along with everyone and can't exile anyone

That sounds like a ton of fun, I haven't been to Tahoe since I was a very young child. Will you be partaking in snow sports? I'd just stay inside and drink

We use to do that every year when I was a kid, we started out as 5 kids My sister, Older Cousin, two younger cousins and myself. By the time I was 16 I had 30 cousins younger than me and about 10 older than me so we all had to get a reality check that it would take 3 days to just open up the gifts one at a time and take a picture. We didn't even have digital cameras back then. I wonder how many rolls of film went undeveloped.

Our German traditions have us celebrating Christmas Eve. The traditional meal from my parents region was an assortment of sausages, saurkraut, potatoes and mustard sauce gravy.
We exchange gifts that same night.
Always worked perfect to have Christmas with the wifes family the next morning

I love my wife, my wife loves me.:encouragement:

We'll see. Typically I love to ski...but my knee has gotten worse in the last year, so I'm not sure if I'm that brave. We'll for sure go to the "little hill" for some sledding, but beyond that...it's unknown. I'm a fairly qualified drinker, though...so at least I have that base covered!

For food, it appears that after the Thanksgiving success of my smoked turkey legs; that's what we'll be having for Christmas.

    Food sounds so Bomb!
As a kid, did you do Saint Nicholas day on Dec 6th where you left your shoes out and Saint Nicholas left you something?
My Oma (from Germany) started us on that tradition.
