The days will start getting shorter now, we loose about 1 1/2 minutes of daylight per day until Dec 20 +/- .....
I've been tracking this cycle with my family for about three-five years now... :smilies_mit_hut019:

TY Candace... WOWzers on the temps, I saw on the national weather that Needles had 123 and Blythe was like 128??? That will fry your brain if you don't wear a hat... ;)
Me and my solstice/equinox project OR Vic and his Catalina project?
I saw that it was mid to upper 60's at Santa Monica pier yesterday... :lalala:Quote:
Your project. HBs project is easy to figure out.
SO.....
in the mid point of the summer due to the sun/earth position our shadows are at a minimum AND at the mid point of winter the shadows are maximum... Half way between are the spring/fall equinox...
I have this utility pole in my yard that I have been mowing around for the last 25 years so I decided to do something creative with it.... I marked the base and have cement around it so that I have a point of referece at grade... I cut the pole off at 10' height and put this aluminum cross on top (since God controls the sun/moon/stars/planets/orbit/atmosphere/universe and beyond)...
I marked a reference line pointing true north from the base of the pole and when the shadow is cast on the ground at the intersection of that north line on the given dates I have marked the intersection of the cross, like crosshairs in a scope :) I have been doing this for about 3-4 years, initially I put in temporary markers and have been double checking the the marks over the last few years on the solstice/equinox dates...
This was known by the ancient cultures, in the area of four corners there is a place called Chaco Canyon and they took this whole study to a level not found anywhere in the globe with any ancient culture. They have the ONLY method of tracking the movement cycle of the moon using something similar and this would have taken many generations to study/chart/mark...
These pics are from last fall equinox 2015 (sept 23), about five-six feet due north from the marker that I set yesterday... NoonISH... :grad:

You may ask WHY did/does this matter??? Well, when the ancient cultures had to track the seasons and migrate north/south OR plant crops according to seasons as a matter of survival, it was very important... Life OR starvation/dying of dehydration... OR dying a slow agonizing death due to freezing temps (migrating south)...
OK folks, tonight is the night... :)
Tomorrow will be the winter solstice, time to verify my marking that I have been tracking for the last 3 WINTER SOLSTICEs... :)
In 2016, the December solstice comes on December 21 at 4:44 a.m. CST. That’s December 21 at 10:44 Universal Time. It’s when the sun on our sky’s dome reaches its farthest southward point for the year. At this solstice, the Northern Hemisphere has its shortest day and longest night of the year. Happy solstice, everyone!
After tomorrow, the days will get longer by about 1 1/2 minutes for the next SIX MONTHS... :action-smiley-035:
Thanks goodness, we need more sunlight.
I am so ready for summer. Bring it on [emoji41]
