The Catalina Island Thread

After working here for 6-8 months now, and going on week 5 of my current gig, figured I'd start a Catalina thread.

I'm not an island expert by any means, but after working here for so long you do learn a few things.

I'm normally here Monday-Thursday. Last year I rented a small house in the flats and I was here typically Sunday-Friday or sometimes longer. But that interfered with my river trips, so Mon-Thu this year is all I'm gonna do.

Last year I was normally in the general seating area on the Express, this year Commodores Lounge. Easier to catch a nap [emoji42]

I'll post up some more pics later, if anyone has any questions about the Island let me know. I'll tell ya what I know.

Who puts the bathroom receptacle above the toilet and ties it to the light switch? Oh, and that happens to be the only plug in sight. So if you're gonna plug your charger in to it, make sure the shitter seat cover is closed or your chargers gonna take a salt water bath [emoji23]

Funny, thats one of the ones I sent a note to the owner to see if they would be interested in a long term deal. The only issue with this one (like most of them) is no AC. And it does get hot here.

The last house I rented didn't have AC, so it was 11-1130 before I could actually fall asleep.

Check the Atwater. It definitely isn't a 3 star hotel, but it is clean and they have AC. And its cheap lol

What a train wreck. I made arrangements with a local friend to get out in a boat to shoot the race. I wanted to fly both ways, but the am flights were booked. So I booked a pm flight home thinking I could catch the express in the am. Wrong. LB Express is booked until 330pm LOL

I'm screwed. Once again waited too long to get my shit together. I'm waiting to see if the Chopper opens up a seat in the am, but thats doubtful.

1. I need to find out when Vons stocks their fresh foods. Rancid salad is disgusting.
2. There are a few places I will no longer eat at. Horrible food, horrible service, and horrible prices.
3. Do not stay in the rooms at the Atwater that face the big Vons. For some reason the kids are out on that street all night long.
4. It is possible to run out of new things to eat here.
5. Sometimes you actually need a jacket here.
6. You don't have to be on an Island to be isolated from your family, it just makes it easier to accept.
7. Who the hell is Rich Meyers?
8. Going from an Island to the Desert wears you out.
9. If you overtip, they will overpour.
10. People here seem friendlier, but they're really not. They are the same.
11. The apple scones at the Metropole Cafe are killer.
12. If you stay at the Atwater, you really will need soap on a rope.
13. Taking a golf cart to work is cool, until you hit a speed bump WOT, then its not cool.
14. The Catalina Express Boat, without the couches in the Lounge, sucks for sleeping.
15. The wash the streets on Thursday mornings with salt water. Its devastating to the hardware on your suitcase.
16. The toilets here use saltwater, don't drink out of them in a drunken stupor.
17. Water saving shower heads suck ass.

There is a STRONG group of well connected collectors for those old single or double lung stationary diesel engines or compression engines... I had this one SOLD to a guy in South Dakota and my friend backed out because he got cold feet selling it for 30k...

SOme how there is a position where it opens valves and lets the engine spin free of compression... Pull the lever and then the intake and fuel metering valve starts to work... :)

It works pretty much like your new hemi.... Minus the blower.... :smilies_mit_hut019:

Yes but I believe they have a 6mi one way limit, which isn't enough to get you to the West side.

You can get to Two Harbors from the San Pedro terminal (limited schedules) and from Two Harbors you can rent boats on either side of the island.

Maybe that is a more centrally located spot to start your tour from???

Gotcha....Is Captain Jacks still there in Sunset Beach. Went there once with my dad and had really good steamers.

I travel here Monday and back home on Thursday normally. Sometimes I stay the weekend if I don't feel like driving.

Not a bad gig, but you're pretty much stranded, last boat leaves around 8pm.

Could be worse places to work. Problem is it's a vacation spot, so it's way easy to get caught up in the nightly activities and 5am comes really fast after a few cocktails [emoji482]

Yessir. He sat for the bar in July I believe, just found out on the 18th. First attempt pass. Smart ass kid for sure. My other son has a great position with the County as a safety manager. My lawyer gets sworn in soon hopefully. I hope I don't embarrass him because I have a feeling I'm going to be uncharacteristically loud LOL

The ones in the harbor seemed fine. It was the two outside near Pebbly that blew in off their moorings and ground up on the rocks.
