View Full Version : WTF!!! Turning 40!

Eli

So, I'm turning 40 in less than a month and I'm unusually (not unusual for me though) absolutely thrilled. I know with age comes wisdom and every wrinkle I have, I've earned.

Each decade in my life has had a different meaning. My 20s were all about my education and achieving my career goals. I was a woman on a mission and nothing could stop me.

My thirties were all about life learning lessons (some sucked balls) and tremendous heartache. I lost a lot, but gained much more invaluable, intangible things. I walk away with the greatest lesson learned, hold on tight to my beliefs while still being capable of letting go. RELAX WOMAN!! Still working on the relaxing part [emoji51]

Now, I'm eager to leap into my 40s. For some strange reason, I'm under the impression that on August 18, I'm going to be receiving my Welcome to Your 40's membership card that comes with awesome perks. [emoji51]

I know some of you are older and wiser than I am...so I'm curious what, if anything, changed for you in your 40's, 50's etc...

Forties are all good. I was able to sport a bikini and look decent. Still had plenty of energy. Fifties are a little less energy and gaining weight is a bitch!!!! I like to eat and drink and not work out all the time. Guess I need to start working out, getting too pudgy. I am shooting for being able to still ride at the motocross track when I turn 60. That being said....my back is jacked right now. No track for me this week:cry2: Just turned 57, so I have a pretty good chance at the track thing. Hoping to be able to waterski this summer. Haven't been able to do that since a bad car accident 3 years ago. Started skiing at 5 years old on the Parker Strip. Forties will be a blast!!!! Smarter and wiser is a good thing. Happy Birthday.

More financially secure and much smarter............if that's possible, also, I finally figured out the things my parents told and taught me were right and the "you don't know what you don't know"

Think about that last one, it'll make sense to you, you've got everything going for you, successful, great Family, beauty and your health, live everyday likes it's your last.

My Daughter, who is any attorney also is turning 40 August 8th, you two have two have it made, happy pre-birthday.

You start getting the aarp letters in your latter 40's so don't get your hopes up needlessly. :D:D
.
Quite literally, I had a shit load of health issues begin to creep up on me the moment I turned 50....partly because I abused myself during my 20's-30's and 40's :D:D:D

Somewhere around 40 women finally find out what they really want out of life.....some of the fluff they so desired before becomes less important.
.
Through High School I was an athlete, aspired to be a professional in fact but that got sidelined with a bad injury. It was a bit of a depressive state I was in because my future now needed a new direction. Architectural design and becoming a pilot was my new focus. Then some chick stole my heart and sperm. That failed and bad habits were formed during that marraige which led to being overweight. Adding more than 140lbs over my 165 high school weight..... Bad for knees and heart.
I raced motocross when bikes didn't have suspensiom, I rode quads for decades in the dunes...Bad for back.
Coming back to a healthier way is difficult especially if your physical condition lacks, lots of failures and setbacks.

The nice thing is, I keep getting older and the girls stay the same age. Mid-20's are ideal. Most of them haven't pulled the pin on the grenade and gotten fat yet, just want to have fun, and have no intention of settling down. Perfect! :smilies_mit_hut019:

I'll tell you what.......at 40 I was in the very best shape of my whole life. Singin' in a band most every night and dancing up a storm on stage kept me in shape. My hair was naturally darker at 40 as well, I still have it, it's just gone salt and pepper. I quit the business in '97 at 42. Only traces of being a rock star are left now.

For me turning 40 was just another day/year. Never gave it much thought. At around 41 was when my body started reminding me of my age. All the fun I had up until then started catching up. Knee problems, tendinitis, liver issues....but as far as I'm concerned those are reminders of a good time. Had the knee repaired at 43, dropped weight at 44 and eased up on the alcohol. Tendinitis is the only thing holding me back now.
My wife turned 40 3 years ago. We got married when she was 24 I was 28.
We've had a great marriage with a ton of fun. But after she hit the big 40, things really changed for the better. It's like a huge weight lifted off of her shoulders. So relaxed now. Like she's finally realized that her life is stabile and it's ok to enjoy things. We even started backpacking this year, 5 years ago she wouldn't have even considered it. We also realized it's better to have a few really good friends chilling on a beach with some cocktails than raging with a hundred acquaintances in a canyon or a sandbar. Chasing the dollar is a thing of the past too. I'm a 45 year old mechanic. I've realized that unless I hit the Lotto or have a long lost rich uncle leave me a fortune, I'll never be rich. So, I decided it was time to stop trying to keep up with the Joneses and be happy with what I have.
In conclusion, turning 40 for us was just another day. I believe our 40's have been our best years yet. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/27/d83aa2f6c3c6873e491e7cd7ffff2b0d.jpg

Eli, I've never seen or talked to you before. I'm sorry someone broke your heart, but from what I gather it was his loss. Turn 40 with you chin up, take all the lessons you've learned and put them to use. Love you for you, love what you do and where you do it. Life is awesome once you realize it's not about what you don't have.
Happy early birthday

Wow, very inspiring.

I'm definitely more laid back as I get older and a few weeks ago I realized that I too prefer my small great circle of friends vs the large rager style party. In fact, I'd rather spend a day with my niece and nephew than go to a party. So, I completely understand giving up "fun" things for your children.

My heartache wasn't a broken heart at all. I just didn't take the amount of disappointment very well. I had to learn that some people are just not good people and I cannot and do not have to make sense of it, all I can do is accept it. But, I'm grateful that rather than allowing it to turn me bitter, I chose to learn from it. I'm very grateful, happy and most of all extremely lucky.

Thank you for the early birthday wishes.

Yep. Very valuable lesson there. Cut the phony douchebags out of your life, let them keep posting on the other board (I keed, I keed), and get on with your life without them. It's funny as there's one in particular that I had in my life. Turned out to be a giant loser piece of shit, and once you step back you can see it clearly. He's mooched off everyone around, and just goes through them one after one. Screwed a bunch of people over in the process. It's funny as I hear from people that he did the same thing to, after they watched him do it to me and thought it wouldn't happen to them. Overall, people pretty much suck and only care about themselves. Find a few good ones and you've got all you need. Then sit back and watch the Karma show unfold. I'm enjoying watching the drug party swinging lifestyle kick the shit out of my old friend. Anytime pics pop up I just laugh as that whole group just looks terrible now. :hilarious:

Well, I wasn't referring to that, but I can't see how the connection was made.

What's interesting is when people think someone who isn't nice, will treat them different. At the end of the day, what matters is that you moved on.

I may have used a little poetic license but was trying to build on your point. With age comes wisdom, at least for some people, and part of that is the more people around, the higher probability for the douchebags to try and infiltrate. The old adage about being unable to count your really close friends on one hand and not have fingers left is very true. I have lots of acquaintances. :rulez:

You made me think of this great prayer:

Serenity Prayer
Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.
Amen.

I have 4 friends (more like family) We have been friends for 25 ish years. I was of the belief that they were my friends and everyone else was just acquaintances. Then we moved out to the country in east San Diego about 7 years ago. My neighbors are awesome. We are always doing stuff together. Every weekend there is a BBQ or some type of get together in the "hood".

I am very happy that I have more that just 4 close friends. Now i have about 10 that will do anything for each other. I agree with the saying that you are fortunate if you can count your friends on one hand and not have any fingers left. The fact that I have this many makes me so grateful I have a hard time expressing it.

Actually, it is very funny. :D:D
My friend is 6'4" and his wife is 4'10" on a good day. Her 350z hasn't a nick in any of the wheels. Your vertical size is not an excuse. Driving by braille is not the suggested method. lol
:) :)

4 10 on a good day?? Hmmm so early in the morning before she shrinks to 4'8"? [emoji23]

I have a pre-trial conference on the following Monday with all trial documents for a min 6 week trial due the day after my bday so I will be probably working 14 hours that day lol...I'm hoping to make it out to LOTO.

I'll plan a trip or something soon. I do have a gift I'm giving to myself, but bc I can't take time off yet, it may be a 1/2 yearly birthday present. [emoji16]
