Hi Guys,

Im new to the forum. I am currently putting together a 1970 Weiman i purchased from a member on Socaljetboats.com

I have a friend that asked me if it was the same boat that was in a release of hotboat magazine. Thats what led me to this site.

Heres a pic of it, and ill update the thread with my progress as it comes back together

Steve welcome to www.hotboat.com (http://www.hotboat.com), glad to have you. Your first post or two (maybe) get automatically moderated. Sorry for the inconvenience, its a spammer deal with the system. After that you're free to post at will.

That boat looks familiar, but I can't tell you if it was ever in hotboat magazine. We are not affiliated with the magazine in any way.

Previously this boat had a blown BBC, however it did not come with the engine. AND im on a SBC budget. So i figured i would meet in the middle and do what i can

Im putting an all aluminum 6.0 liter LS motor in this thing (LFA is the engine code designation). Drove up to Fresno and picked it up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150929_zpslnolhip6.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150929_zpslnolhip6.jpg.html)
Yes, i fixed the way it was mounted on the engine stand after this pic

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150941_zpsuoivqpmj.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150941_zpsuoivqpmj.jpg.html)

Pulled the motor down, and all of the bearings look brand new. This was the worst of the rod bearings
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150949a_zpsypnfsdyp.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0125150949a_zpsypnfsdyp.jpg.html)

All i have to say is this thing is LIGHT. The bare block weighs less than my engine stand i think.

Going to throw a couple sets of rod bearings in it (the ones i knicked when knocking the pistons out) rings, and throw it back together

Well Christmas is starting to get here, got most of the parts to throw the lower end together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0128151922_zpshshtn4gl.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0128151922_zpshshtn4gl.jpg.html)

Still waiting on Rod bearings and piston rings, then can start throwing the lower end together.

while i was organizing everything and getting parts together, i picked up some spray paint at O'Reilly's. It is by Duplicolor and called Metal Cast. My boat has a lot of pieces that were originally Anodized but the anodize is no longer colorful. So i googled this Metalcast stuff and the results looked good online. It is a 2 step process (3 if you add clear). Needless to say, I am very impressed.

After cleaning
Step one
Spray what they call "ground coat" I did one light coat, followed by 2 heavy wet coats
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0128152010a_zps6s5ogjgu.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0128152010a_zps6s5ogjgu.jpg.html)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0128152010_zpsqta7hhnu.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0128152010_zpsqta7hhnu.jpg.html)

Step two
Spray the color coat, this stuff comes in Red, Blue, and Yellow i believe. Same process as before, 1 light coat, then 2 heavy wet coats
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150128_203714_zpsbvf2nsox.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150128_203714_zpsbvf2nsox.jpg.html)

Then for good measure, i sprayed 3 coats of clear ontop of the red

Heres what the finished product looks like, you can see the red almost matches the anodized rub rail perfectly
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150128_210610_zps4cqxhobx.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150128_210610_zps4cqxhobx.jpg.html)

And the carb bowl. Im going to break up the red with the silver (ground coat) I just cleared over the "ground coat"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150129_074845_zpsujbfostc.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150129_074845_zpsujbfostc.jpg.html)

The red is really hard to photograph correctly. But its a nice deep red. It almost looks like a pinkish hue in the pics

not much movement during the week. I spend most nights at the GF's house....

I was home to run some errands, pay some bills etc. Got one of the heads assembled. These springs have a lot of pressure. They literally turned my (autozone style) claw compressor thing into a pretzel had to order the tool seen in the picture

Finally got the right size pushrods and got around to polishing the rest of the ends of the heads, the front cover painted, and torqued.

Harmonic balancer installed and torqued fyi (240 ftlbs, then 37 ft lbs, then 140 degrees) that was fun

Well left work early to get some work done on the boat, and of course never works out like you think it will

I came home, soda blasted the intake manifold, And I have to say. The 15 pound soda blaster from Hartbor freight kicks some ass. But it does make a mess, but who cares it's baking soda!
Here's what the intake looked like after about 5 minutes of blasting (aircraft stripper failed)

After the soda fiasco. I turned to checking out the front motor plates I bought on eBay.

God I hope they work...

So I polished one real quickly just to see if I wanted them polished, painted, or raw aluminum
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0220151941_zpsnieob0fd.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0220151941_zpsnieob0fd.jpg.html)

After I did that I decided to start making my rear plate.

I used a transmission bellhousing for a template and went to town. Its hard to tell but I got the circle about halfway cut out, went to start on the other side and the damn Chuck for my jig saw died. It will not hold a blade anymore :-(

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0220152144_zpsjcpv0ycg.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0220152144_zpsjcpv0ycg.jpg.html)

So it was back to polishing

I did 0 prep on these plates. Just took them to the buffer with various grit rouges and different wheels. Here's one plate about half way through

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0220152039_zpsap6adsx2.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0220152039_zpsap6adsx2.jpg.html)

And the final result

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150220_211945_zpsndu3r9k6.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150220_211945_zpsndu3r9k6.jpg.html)

I painted the intake with vht cast aluminum paint.

So this weekend ended up busy with the family, but I still managed to get a little bit of work done on the boat.

Started out Friday night with the polishing above.

Saturday I woke up and went to harbor freight and grabbed a jig saw.

The same damn thing happens and the saw wouldn't hold the blade. So after tightening it down, I broke the collet
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0221150925_zpshlfk9k2s.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0221150925_zpshlfk9k2s.jpg.html)

So back to harbor freight.... Again.
I decided to buy an "old school" saw. One where you have to bolt the blade in.

And I finished the cut, finally

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0221151107a_zpsb38ymmq1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0221151107a_zpsb38ymmq1.jpg.html)

Then I started on the rest of the plate.

About halfway through my third jig saw decided to catch on fire

(Hard to see in this pic)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0221151140_zpszrxeui0e.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0221151140_zpszrxeui0e.jpg.html)

After this I quit with the jig saws and used my scroll saw. About 5 blades later I had my rear plate. Woohoo!!

So plates are cut, I cleaned up the garage and decided to move on to cleaning the headers up and painting them

Cleaned them with an angle grinder and a wire wheel

Then shot a coat of vht flat black header paint.

I do not expect the paint to last forever. But I'm hoping until I get a stainless set off headers built

And finally, I learned that the radio shack by my girlfriend's house is going out off business. And as such everything is 80-90 percent off

I ended up with all of these solderless connectors for a little less than 20.00

Picked up a bandsaw. if you dont have one. I have to say this is the greatest tool ive ever bought...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0228151628_zpsxhdoy7ku.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0228151628_zpsxhdoy7ku.jpg.html)

got it for 150 off craigslist. It looks practically brand new, came with 4 new in the package blades. Even the "electronic measurement" works

Now that i have a bandsaw i could clean up the rear mount and start on the rest of my rail kit

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0228151629_zpsddaii8er.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0228151629_zpsddaii8er.jpg.html)

Attempted the router on the edges. Im not really happy with the way it came out

After a lot of trial and error, i found that my "truck" oil pan is way to deep for the boat. Its not even close to lining up

Here you can see where i cut that rear mount and used a different set of holes just to keep the pan off the bottom
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/steves86ta/Mobile%20Uploads/0301151215_zpsjwcfe5gr.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/steves86ta/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0301151215_zpsjwcfe5gr.jpg.html)

The motor is sitting on the pan, on the bottom of the boat here. Im still about 3 inches away

So that means i can start making mounts again...... >:D >:D >:D Hopefully i dont screw up this aluminum too... Thinking about making templates first this time

Last night, i figured i would finish making my MSD mount. I had the great idea to mount it to the head. Easy to get to, out of way of water, etc. But im just not sold on it.

I think it makes the damn MSD look bigger than the engine. Im 99% sure im shit canning the mount and going with the transom like this

And finally, i dropped my Impeller off with Chris at B1 a while back. Its done. After talking to him and talking about where this thing will make power, we decided to try a B- cut and go from there. He also detailed it for me

Yeah, the MSD will go on the transom along with a fuel water seperator, and the fuel pump.

Made some what i consider to be major progress this weekend. The Rail kit is in, and the mounts are made! O0 O0 >:D >:D

I learned that i need to try and heat and bend the headers up a little more. As it is right now they clear the transom but are a little close for my comfort

Front plates, i had purchased some bitchin billet motor plates online hoping they would work. Unfortunately they were about 1.5" to short in the front so i had to make these. Not CNC'd or Plasma cut but i think i did well

This rear plate works, and i'm just being picky. But im going to re-make it to give me just a tad more clearance under the oil pan.

I also spent some time with the buffer and polished most of the rail kit. I did the two angle sections that the engine will sit on.

And one of the two motor mounts. Going to finish this up shortly

Rough sanded with the DA and 120 grit to get all the scratches/ cutting marks off, What I dont have pictures of is the sanding after this, the 220, 320, 400, 600 wet, 800 wet, 1000 wet stages. I cheated and used a palm 1/4 sheet sander. Even for the Wet stages

Hard to see in this pic, but they came out pretty damn close to mirror finish
