View Full Version : Mango Madness

Well, it's been a long journey. 2.5 years of blood, sweat, tears and frustration are soon coming to an end. If things go as planned the old Mango Madness SS/PS8 will be in the water January 1. I'm not holding my breath, I've been let down too many times to get my hopes too high.
I think if I'm going to take one thing away from this build, it's that this industry is a strange one. Cash in hand gets you no where, scheduled work doesn't exist and if you find someone that will actually do what they say and when they say it, hang onto them. They are the mystical unicorn.
The boat is finally in good hands and everyday is a day of progress.
I say all this because I've been looking at my boat for 355 days and absolutely nothing changed.
I came close to throwing in the towel, but I decided I was going to see it through. There's still a couple of parts that were promised to me about 6 months ago that I doubt I'll ever get, but hay, lesson learned.
I have no new pics to post, but will soon. I filled out and sent in my Needles entry form, hope to see a lot of you out there.

Greg

sorry to hear about the troubles, went through many issues with my build. once i found the right shop and engine builder the boat got finished and all the bad times slowly fade away. good luck, hope you make January.

Hang in there big daddy, you're almost there... :)

It's funny, one of our fellow boating/gun buddies used that exact same statement recently ^^^

Well, upgraded valve train calls for tall valve covers. Sticking to the current theme of "no half assed modifications allowed" I ended up maxing out the cool meter with this set of NIB valve covers. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/22/ba3aa4ad63567bf26a41de7f4fda81fc.jpg

Turns out the boat never was a champion, the owner/driver won the '92 Pro Stock Championship and badged it with plans of driving it the following season. Those plans fell through. So, this badge was on long enough to stain the original gel coat.
This is what it looked like back then. Wahoo was the name. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/22/e97b83a99bef4d796c90bda213483d8b.jpg

Until something went horribly wrong with the resin and it all cracked like an eggshell. After all is said and done there's over a thousand dollars in black carbon fiber that is not visible anymore. I guess it does look that way. But I tried it a number of times. Position of my arms and how stiff I was did make a difference. If I spread my arms and legs and held them stiff, nothing can flip me over. Being unconscious I'd be limp, arms down, and it did flip me over. But! Every time I jumped in, every angle, depth and body position the jacket turned me over face up every time. I find it hard to believe I'd ever end up in a face down orientation. Not that I can't happen, just saying it felt highly unlikely.

What is the reason for going with a 3 piece plate? Are you keeping the air assist in it?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

MrDenton
03-19-2015, 10:56 AM
Air assist is out. From what I've been told by Billy, Wayne, Schatz and a few others is the air assist can get me in trouble by over plating it. Also the three piece plate helps release air from under the hull.

Oath Keeper

HotWater

Is over plating a concern with a Bezer? Are you selling the air assist system?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

MrDenton

Over plating is a big concern with the little boat. From what I've been told, over plating a Bezer can cause a barrel roll.
The air assist I traded for the 3 piece setup, from peddle to plates.

My plates are 63 1/4" tapering down to 62 1/2" at the back of the plates. The original plates and dropped corners. The Bezer that Billy and I measured at his shop was only narrower (to a race deck Biese) at the transom.

Well, everything went very very good. Initial plate set was a little scary. The little boat wanted to go to the moon. So with a little help and tutelage from Billy, Rick, Truitt, Ryan and Bruce we got her settled down. The best I saw in GPS was 92.5mph. That's when a wire broke on my ignition toggle switch. So, I experienced my first whirl away stop. (Every time out after that I had GPS problems so no numbers to share.)The next time out I felt a little flutter in the peddle at speed so we added some tension to the springs. That helped a ton. All in all I was able to run her flat out at 7,000rpm with very little down peddle input. Schatz says 7,400rpm should be reachable. I'm so thankful to have such a good group of guys helping me out. She just keeps getting better every time out. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/21/69dc3bf67ce2194d1cda2ca4be346d87.jpg

Greg, your mota sounds good!!! What cam are you running???

Here is my question, IS it full synthetic and IF YES, why is synthetic so expensive??? SHouldn't conventionally distilled motor oil be more expensive since it has to come from Iran or Iraq or THe North Sea???

I think that its common to use natural gas to make synthetics but I'm not 100% postitive... I know that the germans made ULTRA clean diesel fuel from natural gas way way back when in war time... I use valvoline full synthetic in my rides and I'm very happy with it for a passenger car oil BUT even that shyt is expensive for regular oil changes...

http://www.synthetic-oil-technology.info/ (http://www.synthetic-oil-technology.info/)

What is synthetic oil?
The easiest way to define what synthetic oil is, is to define what it is NOT. Conventional motor oil as we have known it for the last 100 years or so is derived from crude oil that is taken from the earth with oil wells. Through a complex distillation process the crude oil is refined into many different liquids, or fractions, each having distinct characteristics. Some are very light and are used as fuel (gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel), and some are heavier and are used as lubricants (motor oil, gear lube, grease). There are many molecular compounds present in crude oil and many of those compounds are still present in the refined product, detracting from the physical properties of that product. For instance, paraffinnic waxes are present in crude-based oil, but contribute nothing to the lubricative properties of the oil. Also, the size of the hydrocarbon molecules themselves are non-uniform in crude-based oils. Synthetic oil contains none of these contaminants and the hydrocarbon molecules are very uniform, giving the synthetic oil base better mechanical properties at extreme high and low temperature (see the sections below on physical properties). By contrast, synthetic oil is not distilled from crude oil. It is made through a chemical process known as the Fischer-Tropsch process, starting with raw materials like methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. This process was developed by Germany in WWII, when that country's access to crude oil was very limited.

Grades of oil.
Motor oils are derived from base stocks. That is, a generic oil base is modified with additives to produce a lubricant with the desired properties. A base stock oil with no additives would not perform very well at all. Base stocks are classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and fall into one of five categories.

•Group I and II - these are mineral oils derived from crude oil
•Group III - this is a highly refined mineral oil made through a process called hydrocracking. In North America this group is considered a synthetic oil, for marketing purposes.
•Group IV - these are true synthetic oils, known as Polyalphaolefin (PAO).
•Group V - these are synthetic stocks other than PAO's and include esters and other compounds.

That particular Lucas Oil is like 8.99 a quart right? Torco is about $16 p/qt. And how are you getting away with only 12 quartz? I've got a 14 quart pan, oil cooler and a filter to fill up.:raining:

At Napa it was almost $11 a quart. Not sure how or why, but that's how much I've always used with that pan. No oil pressure issues or temp problems.
