In 1962, Honda , before there was a Baja 1000, wanted to prove how durable their bikes were, and picked Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson to run it. In 1967 Bruce Meyers decided to do the same thing, pre running the course south, and turning around and running back to TJ. IN OLD RED!!!! They broke the bikes record by more than 5 hours. A Manx won the very first Baja 1000 the same year, running the course south to La Paz.

As far as I know, Manx and Funco are the only VW powered cars that ever beat the bikes, and the Funco was a full tube frame offroad racer. After that, Stroppe prepared Broncos ruled the place. It wasn't until 1975 that the bikes started dominating.

Interesting story, really never knew where they came from, at one time they were everywhere ..... couldn't even guess how many were made.

They still make a very similar body called a Kick Out,
http://www.meyersmanx.com/images/ko-1.jpg

They made about 5,250 of the original Manx, and copy cats made thousands more.

I built 3 of them when I was in high school to make some money. They were a piece of cake to build.

Cool facts sir... TY...

I came across a original manx body a few years ago but it was just a little too far gone for my level of interest... THere is one 5x as rough as the one I saw ebay now with the d meyer tag, stretched for an IRS pan... Hindsight being 20/20 I should have... :)

That's bad ass. Always wanted a full body car. Had a Manx for awhile. Loved it, but too small.

This is a long shot....but I'm taking a super wild guess that you have never read "How To Win Friends And Influence People" by Dale Carnegie.

Never heard of such an animal... who makes it Rotax???

The ONLY upgrade I suggested to Uncle Dave and his boats was to include me in his boating trips MORE OFTEN... :)

When I told my wife I wanted to get a dune buggy, she had thought I was going to get a Manx style car to cruise around in. Surprised the hell out of her when I brought this home45807

I can assure you it will do wheelies... The front tires don't touch down on my buddies turbo 2100vw rail job until 3rd gear...

That was my first thought, but all of the WRX engines I have seen were DOHC, and that one appears to be a SOHC. Earlier engine?

The single is said to produce a tad more torque....
Being that I plan to use it on the street a lot I will likely detune it a bit so it'll run on pump gas.
Just have to get restarted on the project is all.lol:cool:
