Well this year we cancelled our plans for LOTO and opted for Lake Powell.

Already booked a home so that is covered.

It is a family trip with kids, in-laws and bro & sister with their kids.

Two boats 32DW and a 2875 Bennington Tritoon...thing is huge mini aircraft carrier.

Any tips or caveats would be appreciated.

It gets stormy in the afternoon. Never really lasts more than an hour but when you see it roll in find a place to hide.

Watch the water for submerged rocks and shallow ground. There are a few random dangers.

Bring lots of money for boat gas. It is the best lake I have ever been to. You will want to explore non stop. So many cool land and water features to see.

And if you have a marine radio make sure you bring it. The lake is huge and if you break down in one of the longer fingers or out of the main part of the lake it may be awhile before someone happens to find you.

are you staying near Wahweap ?

first off get a Map----a must have for this place

https://www.utah.com/maps/lakepowell/#lakepowellmaps
mark the map as you take pics easier to remember where you were
other than that explore !!!!! more to see than you have time
watch out for the tour boat in the main channel part of lake
big giant rollers in a narrow area think the locals called it "Maytag" you get the meaning

1st most important have fun
2nd don't pass fuel docks without topping off

Good call on the fuel docks. If you find fuel for sale buy it.
Man I'm jealous now. I love Powell.

We just got back, spent the weekend out there and had a great time. I have a buddy that has a house boat at Antelope Marina. We leave the house boat in the marina and just do day runs. A couple of the must see's, Antelope and Navajo arms, we do Navajo a couple of time each trip. And of course Dangling Rope marina, best ice cream in the world! It's about 48 miles up lake and the only place to get fuel between Antelope Marina and Bullfrog Marina. Definitely get a map if you never been, it makes it a lot easier and you won't get lost. Plus it shows you all the cool little hidden places. Every time we go out we find something we've never seen before. Pack a lunch, once you go out your not going to want to come back in for awhile. Both Marina's Wahwep and Antelope have floating stores and restaurants. Which make it nice if you want to get out of the sun and grab a bite and a drink. Powell is an exploring lake, you be doing a lot of seat time and seeing things at will amaze you. It's impossible to put Powell into words. You have to experience it, then you'll understand why everyone loves it.

Helluva experience there years ago. I think we had a 55' houseboat and our 24 DCB. Found a real nice cove, hung out there all day. You had to look up pretty high to see the sky. Therein laid the problem. By the time we knew a squall was headed directly for us, we were in it. The anchors wouldn't hold the houseboat so I had to run the engines to keep it on shore and to keep it from hitting a boulder we parked next to. The DCB got some pretty nasty bumper rash from ramming up the side of the house boat for what seemed like an hour. At one point I had to tell everyone to move to the upwind side of the boat because it felt like the houseboat was going to tip over.

I guess from running the outboards in gear and trying to steer, the steering cylinder locked up. So when it was all over and we tried to leave the next morning I had no steering.

Had to disconnect the tie bar and steer the thing like a tiller boat. That was interesting.

Needless to say after we got the boat fixed we only stayed in coves that allowed us to see the horizon :D

Wow! Thanks for the great responses.

I had some work stuff come up and couldn't reply.

We are staying near Antelope Marina so that will probably be our launch area.

I was thinking of booking a slip at the Marina. Is it safe or launch and retrieve everyday?

We will be looking to burn some fuel on this trip. The DW has a great GPS programmable for waypoints and points of interest...plus I bring a handheld.

Good call on the VHF radio...I will bring it.

You know we looked at a House boat and I concluded I did not want to be the Captain of two damn boats. Plus they cost a fortune for a family of 11 people. It was like 14K for the one we wanted. Rented a home and I can assure you we will not spend a fraction of that money on fuel...maybe at the local bar. The DW gets about 320 miles on a tank of gas...plus or minus. It is the Bennington I worry about it will probably be a base boat with dump cans on board for touring the family.

I have heard that Antelope Marina is the bomb when compared to Wah Weap...hope this is true.

Waterheater...thanks for the tip on bringing food and not wanting to come back. A few friends have said the same thing.

Really getting pumped up for this trip... everyone is so positive about this place. Hope the hype is warranted...as I have been to some amazing places.

Now for the travel route. Can I go up through Flagstaff?... or is it better to go around via St. George. Keep in mind we will be towing boats with longer than normal trailers the Bennington is 38ft. and the DW is 39ft. I don't want to experience some treacherous winding roads for miles:schreck:

Again thank you all for the responses:partyguy:

slip in the marina is a must !!!!!!! it will be safe--just don't leave valuables, after being on the water all day sure is nice just tying up and going home
they are all nice marinas
being at antelope you are close to my favorite canyon
if towin from la 15 north easy way--taking 40e a lot of uphill till the top of flagstaff
powell is well marked with bouys hard to get lost if you have a map
even without with so many markers I suppose
hope they have the Castle rock cut out done and the snow melt is as good as they expect
makes is easier to get south end of lake if need be
best part is eastern areas

Bring an enhanced first aid kit. Find a protected cove and use long lines to secure to the shore. I always felt better knowing my boat was secured to shore rather than anchors. Storms are common. What city are you staying in? Powell is a spiritual experience.

I have been going to Powell since '74 and to me it is the most awesome Lake! We had a Houseboat there for 20 years and got rid of it last year,,,,,bummer! The advice that has been said is right on, hopefully you are staying a few days after the Poker Run, that way you can explore the Lake much more. At times it is nice to have a smaller boat and or some PWC's to explore canyons further back that your boats wouldn't be able to go. But the fall time is the best time of year, Sept. and Oct., less of a chance for those afternoon storms, water temp still warm and a little cooler nights. Going north past Dangling Rope marina is my favorite area pretty much around the San Juan area. But really the whole Lake is awesome from one end to the other. Have a Great time,,, I will have some friends there also for the Poker Run and there will be party's at the Marina at some of the Houseboats that some of the entrants are staying.

Do you need GPS or maps? Looks like a wonderful place to get lost.

A map is a must for newcomers. It's not really that tough just when you go into a canyon you have to remember whether you took a right or a left when you entered it. The main channel has mile marker buoy's so with a map it is really easy to navigate.

The photos posted by members are incredible.

I like the fact you have been going for 32 years. It tells me you must really love it...perhaps I have been missing out on a beautiful boating location really close to home.

The replies and posts really pump me up about going. Almost want to pre-run the area with the boat on the way back from Texas...LOL.
