How much would it cost to make 2ea of these? Raw finish is fine. I paid $200 for 2 including shipping.

That's a fair price. Material, machine, heat treat, broach, tooling, fixtures for 2 pcs would be about $1500 total on a good day.
Snap-on made 3000 pcs to get that price at 100 each.

Thanks, I didn't realize there was that much too it, but do realize price is relative to quantity made.

Yeah, I hear ya.

And that depends on the machine. Our large portable costs around $8-10k to set up. But it'll swing a semi lol

What does broach refer to?

Snap on uses a forging die to create the rough shape and the finished internal spines and square end drive. To make the dies is very expensive so to do a small run of parts the internal profiles need to be broached. Broaching is a process to cut those sharp internals.

Thanks, I have always been intrigued by how parts get made.

CH3NO2 The price of the broach alone will give you sticker shock... Here is a short animated video that will give you a an idea how your internal profile is cut... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPkc7PHLlMM

Since that is a cutaway, is the broach basically a male piece with splines being pushed through a female piece? Thanks for the vid, this is interesting for me!
