Big Wake Weekend promoter arrested on fraud charges.
The promoter of a boating competition that was held on Folsom Lake last year was arrested this week on fraud charges.
Robert Richards, Jr., 54, who promoted last summer’s Big Wake Weekend, is accused of defrauding people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, Placer County sheriff’s officials said.
An investigation into Richards started when vendors of the Big Wake Weekend reported that they were never paid.
One man was owed nearly $200,000 and Richards paid him with checks that bounced, deputies said.
Richards was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his Folsom home and booked at the Placer County Jail on charges of defrauding by false pretenses and passing bad checks.
