Sorry RT, I went to sleep. All they said at the press conference was the nationalities of passengers.

This morning there is a news alert that says they have located an oil slick on water. :(

Sad news. Reminds me if the air France flight that went down 5 or 6 years ago without any ideas as to what happened. It was the one from South America to Paris. Just lost radar contact and they started finding debris a few days after it was supposed to land.

Most counties outside the US don't check passports on exit, they just look to see if you have one. You get the review usually done at entry.

I see, if it turns out to be terrorism I see why they chose a weaker security system. :(

I've learned some things watching the news on this, I'm baffled that the crew has the ability to turn on or off the transponder. Shouldn't that be tamper proof with redundant power source?

Things that cannot affect how the plane flies should be human proof. IMO

Another thing is there doesn't seem to exist the same rules around the world for Airlines. On one of the news stations last night they said one of the pilots of this aircraft had been reprimanded for allowing a civilian in the cockpit 2011.
Reprimanded, are you kidding me? This thing gets more bizarre every day. :(

How far below the surface of the ocean can they ping?

I'm still wondering why any aliens who can find there way here would want to abduct humans? We are barely beyond Neanderthal and soon to be walking on four legs again. :D

We all know if I was on that plane my cellular data would have us located in no time.

How would you do it? All family's were notified prior to the press release. No way you can call 300 family members (unless you call and leave with automated message, but that is hard to do in multiple languages). but you can send a text message to update those family members prior to conference and it can be language specific. IMO the notification prior to the press conference was the right thing to do.

Call immediate family that is local into a conference room and let them know that way. There can't be that many languages present that they couldn't find a translator to make it happen. Who know's maybe this is exactly what went down and the news outlets wrote about the text message thing to generate views etc. Either way, what an awful situation to be in.

Definitely agree with you that family had to be notified before the press was.
