Would you rebuild (by a reputable shop) a 350 hour 454 MPI. New pistons , cam, heads. Will be reusing stock crank. Looking to get around 500hp. Or, trade in the 454 for a 200 hour 500hp EFI plus cash?

So much for asking a boating question on a "boating" site. For fucks sakes. I can only get attention when I stir the pot?

How much cash for the 500?

You asked a hundred different people a motor question. If you only get 100 different answers consider yourself lucky. You know where I stand on the issue.

Can't blame the place. People are the same from one site to the next. The Internet is like alcohol. It amplifies personalities and strengthens opinions.

Well you happen to have the same name as my favorite, now defunct, magazine. Figured it might have the same type of content as the mag did. So what is your opinion on my question Mr. Hotboat?

Everybody play nice. I think it is a good question and one many boaters will face at some point. Lets see what others have to say about it.

Rebuild, it will be cheaper to start with and in the long run, especially if you're only looking for 500 hp. For 500hp run the original crank, rods and block. No need to step up anything.

How much for the 500? Rebuilding that 454 to make 500hp with that mfi setup may cost you a bit. I'd plan on some good heads and cam for sure. Then whatever EFI tuning or mods it'll need.

Without throwing out real numbers, I'm assuming the rebuild would cost a few less $ initially. The HP500 is built to get that HP from the get go. I say get the HP500 and run the piss out if it until IT needs to be rebuilt and then Whipple that girl. Well I am spending my friends money after all.

How much for the HP500 and how many hours on it? Does it come with the exhaust? If at all possible I'd go blue.

Also if you go with the HP500 when people ask "what you got in that thing?" you can say 502 instead of 454. ;)

I would rebuild what u have. I am not a 500hp fan. If you do go with the hp motor do a valve job and make sure it is not running lean

It's the 500 EFI not the hp500. No lean condition or cylinder head problems to deal with.

I read this as a trade plus cash. What's the cash? If it's more than a grand rebuild.
And, this trade motor, how many impellers has it lost and over heated, what kind of oil has it had, ever run lean, blah, blah......
Rebuild what you have. 500 hp is so easy and cheap to obtain these days it's sick.

Ive had a boat with a 500EFI, loved it. That boat just ran and ran. Never one issue with it, so I'm partial to blue :D

Some people here don't seem to like them.

This is not true. The people here that are critical about them are hot rodders, tinkers, DIY guys. They know what goes in a motor and actual cost. They are expressing their opinion on what you pay for when buying a mercury engine package. That's it, nothing more.

It's unfortunately not my position to say. It is comparable to the cost of the rebuild.

Look I get it, for the mainstay of the boating industry a mercury package is your best option. But understand what you're paying for. If I were to pay that kind of money for an engine it would make 3000 hp, period. I'm not trying to be a dick about this but it's the facts.

There you have it. Brand new motor or used with 200 hours for the same price. Rebuild......
