View Full Version : Why do people wait in line for gas?

I just don't get it.

I went to the gas station earlier and when I pulled in there were lines for every pump 2 and 3 cars deep. I looked at the station next door that is literally in the same parking lot about 50 feet away and there wasn't a single car in the entire station.:hmm

And then I realized the gas in that station was 5 cents more a gallon. So I went next door, pulled right up to the pump and put my 18 gallons in the car. As I was pulling out I looked back at the other gas station and most of the cars that were waiting when I pulled in were still waiting.

It cost me an extra 90 cents to not wait in line....I don't know about you but my time is worth more than that, and that says a lot.

There's a baller status joke here somewhere but I totally get where you're coming from.
I've known people that will drive across town to save a few cents per gallon. I think for some it's just the appearance of saving makes it worth it.
Maybe if you're filling up a motorhome. 100 gallons equals 5.00 bucks.

And I'm supposed to be intimidated?
Have you put 90 gallons of diesel at 4.29 per gallon before. Yea, it hurts. ;)

That $0.05 per gallon adds up over time.

1000 gallons is 50 bucks.
If you can afford 1000 gallons of fuel, 50 bucks probably isn't shit.

People dont understand the time value of money concept.
Drive by a costco cas station at noon, after work or on the weekends. It is always packed with people waiting 10 cars deep at each pump. Just crazy...

I agree. I do what's easy. Not saying I would fill up off West Broadway in Needles for a buck more a gallon, but I'm not going to spend 10-15 minutes more of my day to save 65 cents. When my daily driver was a diesel, there were a few stations that I knew of that would always be dead or had several diesel pumps so I went there. When you have a diesel, you get easily annoyed at gas stations.

I also don't understand the people that fill up at Costco or SAMs club. Every time I pass one of those gas stations, each pump has a line.

Those stations in Needles and the ones on I-5 at Stockdale HWY in South Bakersfield have to be the most expensive I've seen in the state, and they've been that way for many years. I 'd never wait in line for gas unless I was out but WTF is up w those places???

I only buy gas at Costco if I'm going to shop there. I only go shopping at Costco early in the morning on the weekends or just before they close on a week night so the gas line is never bad. I don't think I have ever waited more than 5 min to get gas. The gas at my local Costco is on average $.20 a gallon cheaper than a regular station. 25 gallons per fill up is a savings of $5. That buys me a hot dog and drink while I shop in Costco.

I agree with you on saving the pennies from station to station. I won't wait in line to save $.50 per tank full.

I loved that app for finding stations with diesel. Pretty accurate on pricing too.

So I'm here in Tempe right now and just took a look at GasBuddy........looks like the going price around here is ~$3.20......If I drive 2 miles Costco has gas for $3.05........take a guess what I'm going to do?? :D

You gotta do the math...
when I was shopping for my latest vehicle and considered what kind of mileage range I should be looking at, it was kind of surprising what difference 5 mpg REALLY cost over a year.
I drive 120 mile round trip to work each day so mpg IS a consideration, no doubt.
But simple calculations at $4 a gallon showed the difference of 5 mpg was less than a thousand dollars a year.
Comparing safety, comfort, and ride of a 20, 25, or 30 mpg car is a WIDE range for $1000 to $2000 of gas a year.
