Where are the pics of the layout??

Going to start it this coming winter. Still designing it. Three levels, 25'x10'. Need to build up the collection first. I am at about 200 cars, need to get over 400 to have a decent amount of traffic...and that's just for starters...I figure to top out at 2-3000...with about 2-300 engines before I have enough to run the layout the way I want to...should take a few more years to get there....LOL....building is half the fun...

So does each railtoad car come in a kit such as a model car you would build and paint the pieced for individually?
How many hours do you average building one railroad car?

Each car starts out like this...kind of a blank canvas. Some, I do very little weathering to, others get the full monty. All cars get something, to at least get rid of those shiny wheelsets. All trains have a variety of cars that range from prehistoric (LOL) to basically brand new. It's part of the art is to find and model that juxtaposition of ages. SO Some cars, like the brown one fro SSW, are much older, though still in service, and get the "treatment" while the Tropicana cars are much younger (yes, that is how you get your Tropicana OJ in the morning) and just get a dusting of dirt, grime and rust on the running gear...

As for time, it can take me anywhere from a few hours, to 10-20 hours depending on what I am trying to do....cars with loads like the one above are actually two cars, so I have to do two for the price of one so to speak...I may add a few more tiedowns to it before I consider it done....:)

The patience that takes is amazing. I would be interested to see your layout when you are ready to start it.

What scale are they? O or HO?

HO scale sir. I had a HUGE collection in N scale, and sold it all off. Just too small for my aging old eyes....;)

These are not mine, I did not do them, they were done by a friend of mine...but I wanted to post this up just because I really like the pic...he does good work and the snow scene is awesome.....and yes, he lives on the east coast....so maybe the snow is real.....:D:D:D

BTW, to anyone new seeing this...this is what I do in the winter months when it's just too damned cold to boat...soon as it gets warmer...well, this thread will be buried till next fall..enjoy the site...and if you have a hobby outside of boats in the winter..well..lets see it....;)
