View Full Version : Today we find out what this is!

You might remember that I found this a couple weeks ago. Today I'm going back to it with rope, a tape measure and a GoPro cam. People on my Facebook argued that it was either a well, and old shitter or a septic tank. Today we find out. Not thrilled about doing it myself.

It's definitely not a Well or a Shitter. It's either to put water in the Lake or Take it out. My .02 And if you slip, it could be your burial site.

I'm here. One thing I find interesting is the water level in it is the same as the lake which leads me to believe it's tied to it somehow. Any guesses on how deep it is?

My guess is its an intake structure from the old hydros that used to be there. The bolts on the top probably held the screens. It probably isn't very deep because the intake pipes/ducts are probably pretty close to the bottom of the lake.

But that's just a guess.

It's so deep I lost the wifi signal on the GoPro. The video is sweet from what I could see.

Folsom had a hydro back in the late 1800's. One of the first ever. That looks like some pretty old shit to me. Gotta be what it is.

Yes, I strapped a flashlight to the GoPro and attached that to a rope and dropped it to the bottom. I was only able to watch on my phone until the wifi signal got dropped. I'm getting off the water now and heading home. We'll see what's down there when I get home and download the video.

Why are you filming an intake? I thought you were looking for a missing plane. Anyways, about all they find in the intakes for our hydro plant are really big catfish.

What you REALLY need to do is get a good quality metal detector. Hell, no has ever scanned that area...when it went underwater, there weren't any....God knows what you could dig up out there....

My guess is corroborated. Intake correct?

GRADS
01-10-2014, 05:45 PM
Okay, so I'm watching the videos now. It is not an intake. I'm not sure what it is. The cement stops about 4' down and it turns into natural soil. So far I've seen gold...yes gold and a couple fish. You can also see the different soils and rocks as it gets deeper...and it gets dark! I have to figure a way to edit the videos and post them.

Pretty sure it's a well or something to do with an old gold mine. It was about 50' deep.

Pretty sure it's a well or something to do with an old gold mine. It was about 50' deep. Well aren't square, weir boxes are though and I don't ever remember seeing a Silver or Gold mine looking like that, But an Intake filled with rock to keep fish out makes more sense to me.

The top couple feet is square the rest of it is round. Definitely not an intake or weir. If I figure out how to post the video you will see.

O.k. cause wells are usually 16" Steel pipe, all the way to the top with a bolt on flange even if it is a submersible pump. Like Vic said those studs are a D.G.A. for a screen, Probably for an intake.

If there were underground mines, it could be an air shaft to let in fresh air. But that would mean either a grate or a big tunnel at the bottom. A wier or intake of some sort, would have a tunnel about the same size as the intake.

How many of the cross braces were there on the way down to the bottom?

There was just that one near the surface. It's hard to tell from the videos but it almost looks like it opens up a little at the bottom.

The camera was also bumping off the wall.:thumbsdown. In this video you can see gold at :18-:20 but it doesn't show up on the youtube video
