I was on the paddle board today (I know big surprise) exploring where the old town of Mormon Island was flooded when Folsom Lake was built. I saw 4 cement pillars on this island so I went to check it out. It turns out they were sitting on top of an old abandoned gold mine. This mine is normally under 100' of water. You can tell the area has been mined because of all the tailing piles.

Very cool. Love those types of findings. The PNW has a lot of that stuff as well.

Cool find!

But, how do you paddle board where there's no water?

Shasta supposedly has an entire town under it complete with a train that got stranded there...if it gets much lower like this...I suppose we will see that also....if we don't get some rain here soon...it won't be deep enough for paddle boarding much longer...

There was the town of Kennett. All but one bldg was relocated and its 400 ft deeper then the lake is now. Doubt that will ever be exposed. There are train tunnels and the old trestles that become exposed. Couldn't find anything about a stranded train though. That would be cool to dive down to. Id bet its all preserved real well too. The cold water that deep would have preserved the old wood of the bldg and rail cars.

Need any help hauling off the loot. Besides watching football tomorrow I've got no plans. :)

Oh shit, looks like KCRA is doing a piece on your find right now.
Mormon Island?
Never mind, re-read your original post.

Glad we figured out how to make the link work, too big for text.
I record the news every night. Just happened to be on when I was commenting on your post.

The way the water is receding, I wonder how much longer till the entire town is visible....funny how it is all of a sudden a "historical site"...they are the ones who buried it under 300' of water....:/

That is so true and hilarious!... I never thought about it that way. It's an actual crime to remove anything from there.

Not sure here but I think that mining spoils are called 'tailings' rather than 'trailings'........but then again, I've been wrong before......at least once..

True, ;) but still, when I used to work out of Yermo, I would wander up to Calico ghost town every now and then out of sheer boredom I suppose. The women in Yermo are so ugly that the word "toothpaste" must have been invented there. Anywhere else, it would have been called "teethpaste"....in any case, the guide told me one day that the tailings around Calico had several million in gold within them...but it was not cost efficient to mine it out....

I talked to a friend today that said they are pulling no less than $1000 a day of gold out of the dry lake bottom. :yikes: I will be bringing my gold pan next time. ;)

If I'm pulling a grand a day out of any thing I'm not talking about it to anyone. Just saying :D

Really not uncommon out west to have old town under water where there has been a Dam built.
