View Full Version : Offshore World Record - San Fran to San Diego. In a gas powered Cat

HB Vic

Just a little teaser, more details coming soon:

A big event will be happening soon, very soon, involving a very large gas powered Cat, that will be attempting to break four (4) speed/time records starting in San Francisco Ca. and finishing in San Diego, Ca. Two other stops and records are also a part of the record breaking attempt. The stops are currently set to be MDR (Marina Del Rey) and The Queen Mary in Long Beach.

Details of the event have not yet been published pending some minor housekeeping items that's should be cleared up shortly.

We, www.hotboat.com (http://www.hotboat.com), hope to be a part of this event and should be able to bring some coverage of the event to our community and the public in general. I know that's a lot of if's, but with the details still pending I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. With a little luck, hotboat.com may be aboard the record setting boat or another chase boat. Again, the details are still being worked out and we will update everyone as soon as we can.

Should be a very interesting event at a minimum. And we will update everyone as soon as more details are available.

Is the boat the red outerlimits. Outlaw Offshore Racing.

I heard a rumor they have been trying to do this. Have had many set backs and delays....

A 50' V powered by a pair of diesels tried this a month or so ago. They left San Francisco and headed south... Got into 10-14' seas and it took them over 9 hours to make it to Long Beach.

Best of luck to this team. I hope they can do it. If it is the Outlaw Outerlimits, that is one bad ass boat.

I think this one is the real deal...

They have been talking about doing it "in the next few weeks" for a couple of months now. They have never given a specific date. Jeff Murray (who is hauling the boat) said he is hauling the boat out, will put it in the water today at the Berkeley Marina, then drive the boat to the San Francisco Yacht Club, stay the night at the SF Yacht Club, and depart Wed morning. Jeff also made plans to have someone drive him back to Berkeley to get the truck.

Best Of Luck to them!!!

Ok, I'll explain how it works: They (Team Outlaw) will establish both records under the Marani Trophy (SF to Los Angeles) and The Marani Bell (SF to Long Beach) if they complete both finish points. The current record (Bob Nordskog Powerboat Magazine Trophy) is held by Nigel Hook, Dan Macnamara, Johnny Lindstrom & Rique Ford his team in 48' Scarab this record was set in 6 hours and 43 minutes back in 2003. Team Outlaw is a Cat (50' Outerlimits) with twin gas powered big blocks so since Nigel's previous record was a V hull they are considered separate records. Hopefully all good - coming up on Pismo Beach!! Getting there!!

The Long Beach run is the second record they will try to break.... Sea Tow 1 is the final finish line not the first one.

Whew, glad they finished!

Ok, so here's what happened. I left to head to Marina Del Rey when they were about the Channel Islands. Earlier in the run the boat had acted like it was out of fuel but turns out the brand new pump failed (tank transfer) and so they pulled off the fuel injection and pumped from one tank to the other to continue. About Malibu they experienced another fuel problem and after getting it fixed got underway and made it Marina Del Rey (they waived off that record in favor of SF to Long Beach) so they fueled in Marina Del Rey and then about 20 minutes later came storming through Queens gate and to the finish line at 8 hours 15 minutes 05:19 seconds. Yes, that beats the 9+ hours that Nigel and Team set with the Lucas Oil Ocean Cup so the Marani Bell is now the Cat Record holder but the Owner/Driver Bob Russell already plans to go back and beat his record. If they didn't have the stops they were going to be just over 6 hours by our calculations to Long Beach but alas that's racing. BTW, PTC, it's not my rules, it's the APBA/UIM rules that we play by. If one wants to try to beat it they can by going for either the Lucas Oil Ocean Cup in a V with diesels or the Marani Cup with a Cat with twin screws. It's all good and I'm happy that they made it safe and sound. All in all a very good day and the start of some good records to come.

Bummer, but regardless an awesome trip! Congrats to them. 8 hours and 15 minutes calls for a long day in a boat I'd imagine!

Well seems I need to do an intervention on this thread. I could go in to a long diatribe of my opinion of Grads and how I truly believe he's harmless and just has a voracious appetite for attention (Grads FYI that's a nice way of calling you an attention whore). But I'm not going to do that this time. This time I think Grads is out of line.

Personally I see no reason for the negativity, comments, or jabs that were made. They do nothing constructive. They only ruffle feathers and cast shadows on someone's hard work and efforts to do something that no one else has done. So I've deleted all of them. I hate deleting shit, but if that's what I need to do make a point, then I will.

I'm not going to ban Grads, this time. But I am going to ask Grads to rethink his future comments. Especially when they do nothing constructive and appear only to be made to ruffle feathers.

As Ross said, unless you're out there in the water racing or running next to them, you don't have a leg to stand on.

No problem. Let me rephrase my original comment. I think a 30'-38' cat with triple outboards would be ideal for this run. A light boat that sips the gas and those outboards can run at full throttle all day long without even a hiccup.
