My all time DREAM boat... The OLD GN24 Body Snatcher formerly owned by Ted Kolby, this boat has been to Catalina in the ski race, 21' Raysoncraft Cruiser...

Any of the GOOD pics that I post are done by my son BRANDON, unfortunately I have to massively crop them down from the 8-10MB format that I get them in (after conversion from RAW)... The detail is spectacular on the larger formats...

I love the way the 21 Rayson cruiser sits... The GN47 is also a 21 Rayson cruiser...

Im going to post up some of the NEW GN24 body snatcher which is the Dcucci rendition of the 21 Rayson Cruiser which was laid up/built by Joey Cucci...

GN7 Bob can accurately tell you all of the unique aspects of each of the different 21 cruiser hulls in the pics... OR any of these hulls for that matter...

Some day Im going to own a 21 cruiser...

GN44 is a fairly new set up and was running EFI, not sure of the current engine set up... Owner is Darrien Sousamian and the driver is one of the coolest guys I have ever met, Dave Rankin...

HP? I would only be guessing but I would GUESS that these guys are in the 800-900 neighborhood... UNless it has Paul Grichar power, then it is MUCHO higher... :D Kidding about that, kinda... GN7 BOB would be a better one to ask but I do know they run pretty high PSI manifold pressure for what they do...

The GN class is my absolute favorite of all the classes, when you know a little about building engines and then see what kind of torture these guys endure in the LONG runs, with such a heavy hull, in comparison to a K or an SS hull... These guys could break an ANVIL in these boats, its some serious torture and GN7 had the whole engine combo figured out... Going fast is cool BUT finishing the FINAL is even cooler, there is MAJOR fallout in this class due to the torture...

The first time I heard the Plan B 305 boat really crack on it I got an erection like a 18 yr old kid... :yikes:

Not me, i couldnt even name 3 or 4 of them... But I know who could name all of them, and the make of the hull, and the engine set up, and prolly who's prop each one is running... :D


Thanks for all the info! I really love the GN boats too. It's just something I've started to enjoy reading about over the last few months. I just was never clear on if there were HP limits and I wasn't sure how many GN boats still race today and how many races per/year there currently are for GNs? I really like the look and colors on the GN911 boat too! I noticed it right away from the Enduro 336, I thought it looked sweet!!

I will tell you a secret about the 911 boat, that is the OLD GN24 yellow boat... I wanted that boat soooooo bad but couldn't bank roll it when it changed hands... :(

Great info, thanks! I was reading recently that there is supposed to be 9-10 GN boats in Parker next Friday? I would've loved to have be able to watch them run, but unfortunately I couldn't get that day off. Looking forward to seeing some pics and video from next weeks race!! I haven't watched GN or K boats in years live, but after seeing some recent threads and events from Parker, Long Beach etc, I'm really wanting to catch a race next season!

I will be at Long Beach for sure in 2014, that is an incredible event... and Im planning on Puddingstone in the spring...

Here is a NEW/OLD GN 21 Rayson that will be hitting the water, I believe at Parker TGD races... This was one of John Nordblad's ski boats, apparently he had MULTIPLE "Gunpowder" boats. Our friend Rich "Lock" is putting this one together with just a little help from Deacon Dave Sammons AND it is sporting Paul Grichar power... Sammons has her looking absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!

Yep me too. Long Beach and Puddingstone are two events that are local and I would love to attend both events!

That GN32 boat is bitchin.... I just really love the look of the Rayson 21. The engine looks awesome. I can't wait too see the footage next week from Parker. Any idea from the GNs entered in Parker who the early favorite might be?

Favorites, my money would be on 24 or 44...... It's a crap shoot, whoever can keep their shit together without breaking... I don't know how many will be running...

Manifold pressure is not that high. In fact its pretty low. Compression on the other hand, we don't discuss even among friends.
You need to bring 1000-1100 HP to the table, or you are back marker, and they only have 475 inches to make that, with roughly 10 psi boost. They are stressed.

Making that much horsepower with the CI/PSI you have...seems like the static CR would be kind of in the N/A pump gas type range?

Yep. Cylinder pressures are stupid. Specially when you consider a roots goes to full boost on the hit, regardless the RPM. So coming off a corner in one is hell on the lower end. Even at Puddingstone where Bill never lifts, in the corners the engine is pulled down about 2000 RPM by the boat being deeper in the water plus the rudder blocking the prop. Full load at 5000 thru the whole corner just torments the crank and rods. That is the only place we ever tore the snout off the crank.

This is why I have such respect for the GNs, I recognize it takes a planning and skills to put one together AND keep it together, MORE than in the other classes that make 5 laps and are done...

Done? You make it sound like they go home after 5 laps.... What about testing, heats, semi's and the final? And keep in mind that many of the GN boats aren't running the entire race at "full" throttle.

I'm not saying your point is wrong, but give the other classes a little more credit. :)

No, no, no, no, I didn't mean it like that at all... No DISrespect for the K's or SS/PS or cracker class is meant in any way...

It's just that the GNs are my fave and partially due to the abuse that they endure and the water conditions that they can run in...

Watching TY and Robbie in the SS shootout of the century at Long Beach, gunnel to gunnel lap after lap, two years ago was like poetry in motion, The crazily overpowered K's are amazing and wild... BUT the GNs and the conditions they endure are amazing to me...

Hey Bruce, when I switched my video hobby to a business in 1997 my first paying client was Bob Devine. Robbie won both races that day and in the weeks after Bob proceeded to bootleg and distribute videos to the rest of the GN teams. I was well known quickly because of it. :D

Wow, either Lance had his hands full OR he was letting it all hang out...

I was out there at that time next door, actually I started going to Seal Beach/LB in the mid 80's... I had no idea that was going on right next door...

The second plat of the Spinaker Bay subdivision wasn't started yet and my inlaws were in their first house near the side enterance to the stadium on that side... They eventually moved to the far end near the rowing center around 2002... I used to sit and drink my morning coffee outside the rowing center every morning but had no clue that the circle races were going in the stadium... We were all wrapped up in the ski races and used to patrol/crowd control at the opening in the federal breakwater... There are alot of folks that USED TO drive/run their boat in the Catalina race living in Spinaker Bay... Most are retired from that scene now...

I guess I have lot of questions about the engines...how do you control detonation? I mean, all I can think of is backing the timing down or run pig rich....but if you did, you'd never crest the 1k hp mark. Very high octane?

Lot of water flow thru the heads with a few tweeks to keep them as cool as possible. Piston oilers to keep the heat down in them along with a with other things I don't really care to reveal online, and yes, C16 fuel.

They are tougher than you think. I never run one, but the 305 did and never broke it. The snout is the weakest point, not the crank itself.
We torn the snout off a Scat, but that was at Puddingstone, and that place and Burley are the hardest on the crank snout by far.
Between driving the blower and the boat off the snout, its the first thing to go, not the crank itself.

The longest lasting crank I ever ran was a stock GM LS6 crank, and its still in one piece.
They all can fail the snout. This is a Sonny Bryant billet in a N/A 850 HP GN, with about 4 seasons on it.

This is the biggest concern with the lower end. 6000 rpm and no oil pressure on the start. Other than this, and the crank snout, we don't give much thought about the crank and rods. Valve train and pistons is our biggest concern.

I can't count how many times I was shooting a gn race and the boat I was zoomed on disappeared behind a wall of water in the turn. If you didn't know better you'd think there was a flip or a spin out, but nope that usually not the case. :D

Its hard to see, but most of the water is being pushed away from the boat, Very little of it, if any lands on the engine.
That kind of wash of other boats, specially on the outside of a cruiser is what you have to avoid. The 20 sets up a wall of water like that when its turned in hard, usually some sort of defensive move, like that was. The 21 sets up a wall of water on the outside, and very little on the inside, Its a chine thing that makes them different. Its also what causes the 21 to stand up on its side off the turns sometimes, and the 20 never does. The outside chine is well out of the water when a 20 turns.

Believe it or not, the worse wash down we ever suffered was at the 300 enduro, when a driver cut across Bill's path. the enduro can be a little risky because the vast majority of the guys out there don't race, and they can do some pretty stupid things.

Its situations like this that are a much bigger concern than the water that comes off your own boat. Specially in the salt water of Long Beach.

If you had a clue to the life span of the average GN engine. Some are a little longer than others. Some are so short they couldn't finish a K boat heat. But they lay down some "blistering" laps that impress people like you.
