So how much will a bare hull run and what it's going to weigh? I'd like to build one some day with the same graphics as our Eliminator. (hope my wife isn't reading this)

Step #3 Mix and spray the Electric Lime Green Polyester Gel Coat Color. Keep in mind this is a one color boat with no graphic. It takes alot longer to mask off and spray a boat with more colors you have to repeat all these steps for each color.
Lime Green?????

Dude, I thought you were from Hawaii......not Hawaiian Gardens:omg:

Preston and i made a deal back in 2011 on building the Plug and molds. When this second boat hull is done being build for me i will sign over all of my rights of the Plug and Molds to Perston. And then Perston will be building and selling them.

I am just curious about the process of building a plug and then the mold. If you have any pictures of building the plug and the mold it would be cool if you could put them up.

Very cool thread MK, thanks for posting it up. Question; since this dude is so small, what do you do for stringers, bulkheads, coring, etc?

Cool thread.................when do you expect to splash her.

HB Vic
09-25-2013, 07:45 AM
Stringers are for V-Hulls you don't need them in these Kats. Bulkheads, and Transom Knees are put in later in the build. What i've posted so far is just a start of whats to come.

Gotcha. So as far as the materials, same stuff as larger boats or something lighter/smaller?

Here you go. I'm having problems with the photos not loading up, For some reason i don't know.

I think I remember seeing these pictures before. Can you take us through the Plug and Mold process? When you build the Wood Plug do you test it on the water first and make adjustments before making a Mold of it?

Stupid question but...

I see so many of the Schiada mini's but not many of these Mini cat's like you have Wayne, why? Just not many out there? or are people scared of them? I am in the market for a mini boat I was dead set on a mini Schiada but I kinda like the mini cat idea.

These Mini Kat's have never been on the market for sale but are now that has alot to do with it. I have never seen a Mini Schiada every on the water in Lake Havasu, i would like to. What i see is the Mini Schiada is a Parker thing at this point and time. I can't tell you how the Mini Schiada run, work or handle because i've need been in one.

Thanks.

I have some boat building questions.

first (not a question) from what I understand it takes many weeks for a boat to cure/set up after the glass and resin have been layed.

When the glass and resin are curing is it like concrete? Is heat created during the process? If so, would sticking it in a refrigerated room cure it quicker without compermising the strength? Does vacuum bagging help the curing process or does it just allow less product to be used? Vacuum bagging looks like a simple process (I know nothing of it) so why aren't all boats bagged? Esp since it possibly allows the use of less glass and resin. Not sure if im asking the right questions but im sure ill get thr answer im lookin for.

So which is better (if any are over the other)?

Ambient air temp cure? Would heat speed up the cure? Would a 45 degree temp room be better/quicker??

Vacuum bagging only removes the Air pockets from the glass and resin. Hense speeding up the curing process and stregthining the bond.
The use of less material i think is never a good idea, use of better glass or carbon fiber is always an alternative. Heat is created by the Chemical reaction
between the resin and hardener. Warmer the ambient temp, faster the kick off of the resin. Cooling never a good idea for it accelerates curing time.

Just my experience in Glass Work. Hope this is helpful !
