Construction(civil), work for an "ENR top 50 Contractor" who is also the only contractor of US domicile on "Ethisphere's Top 100 Companies" to work for. We are considered a horizontal contractor(thought I would give Grads some fodder to work with), which means we build roads, runways, utilities, canals, light rail, etc. Specifically, I am working in an office billing out Change Orders and Force Account. Its a temporary assignment(1 year) that I wish would last forever, no ones pulling my hair and I dont have to pull anyones either. :D

Very cool and now I know why the hobby with train building

I needed a creative outlet. When I was a kid, I built models, loved it, then I grew from that to RC planes, crashed a bunch of them, and thought I can do better and went back to trains. I like the creative side of it, the artistic side. There's a lot of other things going on, electronics, computers, wood, you name it....and it makes for a lot of fun when we have friends with kids over...they never want to leave...LOL...

He is welcome any time, as are you sir. Just let meknow, and I'll have the red carpet and nickel tour for ya waiting to go....;)

As for Grads question, the equipment is good for 110, but we do 80 with it till they get some mods done, then we are supposed to do 90...that will make it a seriously fast trip...still, they are a kick in the ass to run, not like the 8000' freight trains I ran out through Indio for several years before coming to Amtrak....

There is a lot of history in what I do. As it has nearly always been, passenger trains were a seniority bid for the number one seat. At 25 years, I feel I have earned the seat, and try to do the guys that came before me proud. Someday, I will be admitted to that very exclusive club up there (or down there, as the case may be..LOL) and I will be able to look them in the eyes and not be ashamed...

Well thank you sir. Not sure how you guys know your crossings and shit but I live 1 mile west of a crossing at Fry road in Vacaville, 5 miles or so south of Dixon. Hear the horns blasting a lot at night. I work near Martinez and Oakland every day. I'll go for a ride.

Gotta meet me in Merced at the Amtrak station there on a Saturday, bring the family. I'll take you down to Hanford, you guys can go over and get some ice cream at the creamery there, and then go back on either 715 at about 3 or 717(my train) at about 5...let me know...

Otherwise, if you want the full tour, you can stick with me all the way to Bakersfield and have lunch across the street at the Mexican place and then come back with me on 717 returning to Merced at around 6:45 or so.....

I was going through the Port of Los Angeles/long beach a month or so ago and find it so intriging...the whole process...unloading/loading. How do the containers not move when stacked??

There are twist lock locking cones in between each container...

Actually at the Havasu Marina Launch ramp. I was launching my Schiada all alone and he recognized the boat (any my sticker on the truck) from the boards......introduced himself and helped me launch. He even parked my truck for me and walked back down to the launch ramp with the keys......it was above and beyond :3::thumb:

Yes it sounds dumb. Protect yourself and your family. You paid into the system for times like these which is why it's technically called unemployment insurance when it's deducted from your paycheck. Don't be pridefull as you've paid the policy premium now it's time to use it. You pay into the system for a purpose.

Quick story on my unemployment experience. Years ago I worked for a very large electrical products company. Like $11B+ or so. Very old company. Very steadfast on projections. forecasts, and cashflow. One year, a particular quarter (well in to the future lol) wasn't looking good. I think all of us managers adjusted our forecasts, down lol. So they gave all of us a week furlough, without pay, bastards anyway. HR said we could collect unemployment, and like you, I never collected in my life. So I say, wtf, why not. I've been paying in to this thing forever, why not take a little back. So I do all my paperwork then take off to the river for a week. Someone from the unemployment office calls and says I need to apply for jobs. What? I don't want another job, I was laid off for a week, I just want to collect for my week. She says I need to come in to their office. I say "I'm not coming in", "I'm at the river", she says "well then you're screwed" LOL. I hang up and crack open a cold beer. Hopefully I'll never have to do that again. But if I do, I probably won't say that again :D
