View Full Version : Here I go again, another build but this time a 21' Daytona

Okay, to keep from somebody starting this build without me and likely spreading all sorts of lies about how I stole this boat from him (:D ), I'll get this going.

My good friend Proppy found a 1983 Eliminator Daytona with a big ol 300 horse whacker hanging off the back and brought it home. He and I talked for over a year with me poking at him to let me buy it from him so he could focus all his time and money on just one project (that I'm sure he will post up a build thread on here) and after a moment of insanity or out and out foolishness, he offered it to me for sale.

Before he had a chance to say no, I grabbed my wife Jan and our less than 1 year old Austrailian Shepard, Sonny in the truck and off we headed making the regoddamndiculously long drive south from Washington down deep into California.

Got down to Proppys place around 1 in the afternoon, swapped some good tires and wheels I brought with me and chatted for about an hour and though I would loved to have stayed longer, we really needed to get back home before work kicked off Monday morning so off we went around 3pm Saturday afternoon.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/Daytona.jpg

Drove non stop only stopping for fuel & dog walks we pushed thru California into Oregon. That damn pup was so good and slept in the back seat and never was a problem EXCEPT for when we finally got so tired that we had to pull over at a rest stop for a short nap. His natural instincts to watch the herd meant that while we slept, he was wide awake and would growl at any truck or visitor of the rest stop. Regardless, we still managed a short power nap and off we went.

We finally pulled into the drive way around 1:00 am Sunday night Monday morning exhausted and tired of sitting in that damn truck.

True to form, we drove over 2000 miles and the only rain we saw was about 5 miles from home.

Though bed was calling my name, I was gonna sit in this damn boat and have a beer first.

Sadly, this boat like so many had been abused with multiple holes in the stringers, transom and the bulkhead was completely butchered. The original stringers were less than 1" thick and other than the Knees back at the transom, they werent much taller than an inch either. This is a light layup and I was afraid I was going to break the gunnels out of it just leaning into it so I knew I wanted some gunnel supports too.

Here's some pictures of what we started with.

Since this was going Jet, I needed some bigger stringers to mount the motor to and no matter what ideas I, and others came up with, I knew it was just a bandaid and they needed to be replaced.

So, with some metal on each side of of the stringer to act as a gaurd, I set out with my sawzall and cut them out. Part way thru I discovered that I could bend the blade at about a 45 degree angle and could cut the stringers without the gaurds and it made it really easy and was easily controlled.

What I found was that the stringers had delaminated from the glass cacoon that it was incased in.

This little tool was handy as hell. I ended up burning up this little one but I bought a Ryobi 18v one that matches some of my other stuff and it's a cutting machine and so controllable

All cleaned up and ready to get after putting it back together

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/72751492.jpg

There’s a lumber yard close to us that deals with really nice stuff for Rich Folks houses so I went there and got some “Premium Grade” straight grain clear Douglas Fir Kiln Dried 2x4a.

Routed the top with a round over bit

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/43e16bb1.jpg

This oughta be more beefy than the old stringers..

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/faf6fad1.jpg

Got the stringers cut down to lower the seat and finished my gunnel supports. The supports now tie from the stringer, across the balsa reinforced tunnel across the balsa reinforced sponson and then tucks up to the gunnel where there is some 3/4" plywood glassed in. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/e7a7eaf4.jpg

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/211067ce.jpg

Knocked out a splash well bulkhead as well that ties to the stringers

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/61fe06da.jpg

Started grinding on the transom to get ready to cap it as well as plug the old holes. Transom was incredibly sound. Only one spot about 1/2" x 2" where there was some rot right along where the deck and hull meet. Ground that all out and will be a super easy fix.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/ad370cee.jpg

Funny, there were two little cracks up high on the transom and upon grinding those out we found where someone had drilled about 1/2" holes too high and so the stuck a dowel in there and then filled it with Bondo. The dowels pushed our with no bond whatsover.

We also found a couple more that were just filled with Bondo. All totaled I filled 32 5/8” holes in the transom with some resin soaked oak dowel.

Got the stringers set in a bed of epoxy . HUGE thanks to my son Ian for the help. I quickly became the goffer boy and he did all the work....

I’m a huge fan of Epoxy over regular Poly or Vinylester resins. For this project I’m using West Systems 105/207 make up. One of the nice things with Epoxy is you can throw some heat at it while it’s still wet and flow it out even more and get rid of any little air bubbles that may form. DO NOT try this with regular poly resin or you’ll have a dandy fire. Epoxy is non flammable while Poly resins are!

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/Daytona%20Build/e5c8695b.jpg

I then ground out the seam and capped part of the transom by laying 3 layers of 9.5 ounce cloth along with resin and Colloidal Silica (406). The brown that you see is the fairing powder (407) that I added to the resin to get the transom really close to final finish. It still adds some strength but is much easier to sand. Followed that by shooting some DP50 and some K200 I had laying around and blocked that out to the final surface.

PLEASE NOTE! The above was an assumption by me and I was wrong on my application that I'll describe later........grrrrrr

Well, as I mentioned earlier I made a mistake on the transom.

I assumed that if I used a conventional process as if I was going to paint the transom (ie... catylized urethane sealers, 2 part epoxy primer surfacers..etc...) that it would be that much better when I shoot the gel.

Well, what's the old saying about "assumed"....yup I done made an ass out of me...LOL

Turns our Gel wont work over all that................sooo, even though I spent a regoddamndiculas amount of time getting that baby smooth, I had to sand all that stuff off with some 80 grit....

I have one of the premeir Gel coat guys in Todd Griggs, helping by phone and keeping me from making more mistakes.

So, that's as far as I've gotten. I need to spray the gel, double drill the pump and get everything powdercoated and then it'll be full steam ahead.
John

Thank you very much. It's been a fun project so far and the first that my son has really been involved with as the previous one he was much younger. Makes it so much better to do this with him.

BUT, that experiance has given him the confidence to do another so he's working on a friends boat now too. My poor old wreck got pushed to the smaller bay while we work on the other one.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. If my son and I can do this, anybody can. Trust me, I make more than my fair share of mistakes.
As far as motor, I'm going to use my blower motor Barry Obler of Obnoxious Racing Engines built me a few years back.

For a pump, I've got a Berk pump that I need to figure out how to rebuild and will be spinning a AA stainless impeller. The intake was machined by Chris Starkweather of B1 racing and he built us a really nice custom backcut shoe and some blended shims. Also got a rideplate too.

Austin Cole of AHP Powdercoating sent me a bunch of different color samples and we taped them to the boat. Jan and I sat and staired at them for hours trying to find the right color

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/p206x206/154539_3929130110410_869769885_n.jpg

The color we settled on is Illusion Red and matches one of the colors of the boat really well. Plus it's got some nice small metallic in it as well.

Okay, here are some updates since the last time I posted up here.

I took last summer off and after our big Skagens End of Summer event, I got back at it...........but!

I was so proud of how good the transom turned out and foolishly assumed that if I used a conventional process used if I was going to paint the transom (ie... catylized urethane sealers, 2 part epoxy primer surfacers..etc...) that it would be that much better when I shoot the gel coat.

Well, what's the old saying about "assumed"....yup I done made an ass out of me...LOL

Turns our Gel wont work over all that................sooo, even though I spent a regoddamndiculas amount of time getting that baby smooth, I had to sand all that stuff off with some 80 grit....:yikes:

Okay, with all that sanded off I took my first swing at spraying gelcoat. Todd Griggs matched some poly gel for me that was spot on. Since you have to seal off any air to get the gel to harden, I was torn between adding wax, spraying PVA over the gel or adding some DuraTech. I talked to Fiberlay who are fantastic people to deal with (they have a great website) and he got me some Orca AirDry which is similar to Duratech but doesn't tint the gel. You add it at 35% to the gel for the first couple coats and then 50% after that. It air drys and there's no need for wax or PVA. I also added 5% styrene to it as well to this it for spraying.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/015_zpsc2bc72d2.jpg

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/019_zpsc5e1ee40.jpg

I sprayed it on as suggested and it lays smooth. I had a bit of a problem as I tend to like to get close when painting to really see the paint laydown. I've done this for years BUT... Gel is a a lot different. Getting too close you could see the air blowing the gel around as it layed. I would get quite a bit of orange peel that way. They recommend 12" to 18" which I just couldn't remember to do and kept creeping closer. Due to this I ended up with some runs but felt pretty good when I quit.
The next day I walked out there and was completely disappointed. It looked awful. Very orange peeled, splotchy and didn't look good at all.

Well, sanding made all the difference and I gotta say it looks great. I knocked it down with some 400 and will wait to continue color sanding and buffing till after I get done working on the boat and will buff the whole boat. HUGE thanks to Todd Griggs for all the time on the phone walking me through it.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/042_zps34bc47ab.jpg

Next up was to modify my pedal assembly some more. With my long legs I had a hard time with getting my left foot on the dead pedal. So, I redrilled the mounting holes in the pedal and moved it down. That helped a bunch and makes it feel much more natural. At the same time, I needed to make something for Jan to put her feet against. Ended up picking up some of the BMX axle pegs that the kids all have to help them do tricks. One of those on each side of the stringer should really help her feel comfortable and secure

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/536887_10200619815121531_1739608312_n.jpg

Also picked up new steering assembly from JBP.

Next we (actually Ian did all the work) made the first attempt at installing a intake that we had Chris at B1 Racing machine for us. Chris was a big help too as he talked us thru the process by phone and email. Measured once, twice and a dozen more times to make sure it was straight with the keel, centered and at the right height and after multiple in and outs to make sure we could duplicate it without having to adjust again, it was ready for epoxy.

That Seagoing epoxy is some stiff sticky stuff!!!

But, it turned out pretty darn good iff'n I say so myself.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/188198_10200184242762068_1933368546_n.jpg

With that done we could make the final fits on the JBP motor plates. I also picked up a used set of billet swim steps coming that were advertised elsewhere. They're hot pink so I dropped them off with Austin at AHP coatings to get that nasty pink stripped off.

We then began building some 3 piece transom plates. Again, Ian knocked it out of the park with these as well and being 3 piece, it'll make it really easy to pull the pump for mods without disturbing the transom seal.

Next up was to mock up the rest of the transom including the swim steps (yet to be polished)

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/jrork/657_zpsb5d7e8e2.jpg

I also punted on the Carbon Fiber dash. We discussed it and given that nothing else was black on the boat, it looked out of place. So, went after making a Stainless dash panel that would be blinging to match all the rest of the polished metal. Damn that stuff is tough to polish! Also added boost, oil pressure, fuel pressure, water temp, volt and fuel level gauges.

While I was at it, I built a riser out of some aluminum to raise the diverter handle so it would clear the tunnel tops.

In the previous pictures you can also see my first cut at the blower belt cover. I like to use for sale signs for pattern material as they're cheap, super easy to cut and hole their shape better than paper or cardboard.

And now transferred over to some 1/8" aluminum plate.

Next up is to get some 4" aluminum tig'd to the sides and then polish

Thanks very much and thanks for the help getting signed back on.

That's a good start on the updates. I'm headed out to the shop now to pull the motor and begin breaking the boat back down for powdercoating and getting the pump double drilled by Matt and Darin at White Flag Racing.

Still have to mount the AIS water/meth system and being wiring and plumbing. Then it's assembly time. :partyguy:

Still dont know what I'm going to to with the trailer. It's super ugly but may have to stay that way this summer as I have to finish my telescoping tongue (cut the old tongue off) first.

In the meantime, we picked up another boat for my wife. 1983 AquaLark Mni. 8' long and 4' wide. LOL....gonna be a blast!

You did some fine work there fella, especially the new stringers and floor work :thumb:
But I have a question...for engine location, what was the deciding factor?

jrork
04-13-2013, 04:56 PM
Thanks HD. Engine location came from alot of discussion with Chris at B1 Racing along with knowledge of how we boat and this hull. Chris wanted it as far forward as we could get it and would prefer 24" from the transom as a starting point. This is a lite layup Daytona with a hull weight of 691 lbs rigged with steering, gauges and misc stuff.
At the other end of the spectrum is Jan and I really want a good family rig that we could enjoy with the grandkids. So, we settled at 23" from the transom. We have a short blower snout and blower hub in the shop and may consider installing that and moving things around but to be honest, I just wanted to build a good cruiser with a bit of a bite. As is, it should fit that bill nicely IMO..

what i'm curious about is......you have a MASTER in your backyard with 21ft daytona, why you'd call three states over for advice is quite baffling. Have you talked with tony at all??? what did tony have to say about it? I'd say he might have to take the "nod" when it comes to setting up a 21 in my humble opinion.
be safe, ron

Thanks guys. RonDayne. Is this THE Rondayne from the old days? Hope so. It was always interesting watching the traffic your posts provided.

Tony is a great resource and provided us some great tips on cutting and setting the intake (I neglected go mention him). How we ended up with Chris was really quite simple. The stock intake was a gift from a good friend down there and since he was going to B1 for somethimg else, he offered to drop it off with Chris while he was at it. Worked for me. Chris in turn cut it and built a shoe and shims based on our description of the boat and what were looking for it to do. No knock towards Tony whatsoever. In fact, I was just over at Tonys a couple weeks ago picking up some parts. I need to make another trip over once everything is powdercoated amd pick up some more goodies

i very well could be him. got some mod issues with infocaliforniac over at the "other" site. The "mod" tag has gotten to his head and he wants to play politics. Doesnt want "meaningful" discussion and opinions that stem "outside" the box. Just biased cheerleader stuff ya know. Powdercoating is done.

The color is Prismatic's Illusion Red with Clear Vision over it. It's shot over a special candy base primer that AHP uses and the color is really impressive. Sometimes it's got a faint orange color, sometimes burgandy and sometimes red depending on the light conditions. Plus it's got some really nice metallic on it.

Keep updating John, I love seeing what you and Ian do. Your guy's work style and idea's have so much to offer for us DIY types. Sorry guys. Yah, I'm way behind on this thread.

I'll try to update it.

We got the pump in and I have to hand it to my son for the killer pump plates. They're 3 piece plates with the one mounted to the transom permanent and they really turned out great.

Also picked up some of the most obnoxiously neon pink powdercoated swim steps off of a guy. Got the powder coating stripped and then polished them up. Much better

And lastly, we had set a goal to attend a big performance boat show in town. We had to be there at 10:00 on July 27th.
Well, on Wednesday night the 24th, the pump was still in pieces, there was no rubrail, we still needed to mount the headers and hook up the exhaust, finish plumbing and some wiring, get a driveshaft built, hook up the cables and install the interior. Oh, and a million other things.

Tony Skagen at Skagen Boats was great and did a bunch of work on the impeller and put the pump together. We picked it up and raced home where we got it bolted up to the intake and installed and sealed up the plates only to realize after all that that the pump had a slight noise and needed to go back to Tony on Thursday morning. Got it back to him the next day and he dropped everything and was able to fine tune it a bit to get that little noise to go away. Thanks again Tony!

Anyhow, the thrash was on and we fired it late Friday afternoon for the first time and celebrated a complete boat.

And by late Friday night we were essentially done. While we would like to say the fireworks were set off by the city for our accomplishment, it was probably for the big festival that was kicking off (which the boat show was part of).

Anyhow, we got a few hours of sleep and then got up early to try to clean all the fingerprints off the old girl and at 9:00 am we floated it for the first time. Wow! We did we have some leaks as in our haste, we forgot to seal the rub rail and the plates and cables leaked too. Oh well, who cares, we were off.

Long story short, it was a fantastic time. Best part was in the midst of all those beautiful offshore performance boats, our little boat was very well received and we even won a trophy!

Thanks everyone. We didn't get to run it a bunch before the rains returned but we did run it enough to know that we love it. Runs 90 effortlessly on just 4lbs of boost and would do plenty more but it develops a nasty porpouise right there and I didn't have the nutz to try to drive through it. It also likes to carry the bow high with just one person in it so we'll work on setup over the winter and with luck, will dial both issues out.

It does take a really nice set with two people in it and the diverter all the way down.

As far as safety, that is exactly why I went with a Daytona. Water that would beat us up in our Brendella is like setting on the couch with the Daytona.

So, it's all tore down again for some minor tweaks and revisions but these are all really minor things and will give me something to tinker with over the winter.
