This is Wendi writing under WMC: A Saturday meet and greet at 8:00 am at the Queen Mary for a ride to Catalina dubbed the "Cats to Catalina". 4 boats and 18 people. My first time ever to Catalina and in a 24' cat. The ride there was not bad according to the driver and passengers. I was a bit scared. He averaged 60 mph. We stopped to watch a pod of over 100 dolphins which was the coolest thing ever. The water was so blue. It's a kind of eery feeling when you don't see land anywhere. Finally up ahead you can see the Island through the clouds. The island was beautiful. Clear blue skies and clear blue water. I saw a bright orange fish that you would see in the Carribean. The boardwalk was really neat. All the cute shops and bars. We ate at Antionio's. Might I recommend the fish tacos which were amazing and the rum matai (I believe), It comes in a mason jar. Oh so good!! Went to the local "dive bar", named the Blue Marlin and did a shot of fireball. So needless to say I was feeling pretty good when we left. The ride back was intense. The swells were bigger, closer and the added wind factor made it worse. We were getting air like crazy, hitting hard. We were going 30-40 mph, the chop was crazy. Today my entire body is sore. But I must say I felt very safe with Rob at the helm and truly enjoyed the day. We drove through the Los Angeles Harbor and saw the big freight rigs and the Iowa ship up close and personal. The day ended around 5 pm. Thanks Rob and Dustin for inviting us. We had a great time.150771507815079150801508115082150831508415085 15086150871508815089150901509115092

Wendi,, likely the "orange" fish you saw were Garibaldi, the California state fish. Juveniles are particularly beautiful, with iridescent blue spots that disappear as they mature. I did some scuba diving when I lived in San Diego, basically the only bright fish you would see.

Great pics. Love the fact that you guys made the trip in 25ft cats. I've made the trip to the island on a 42ft Fountain (ride back was in rough water) and loved it...

Nice run in a fairly small boat. So nobody jumped out in the channel for a swim?

Looked like a great trip... Something I would love to do one day.

Can one of you tell us how you dealt with the salt water, and the boat cooling systems, trailer, etc?

They have wash out stations at the ramp. I spray wd40 on my trailer wheels brakes and springs before we launch. I also spray the blower and flame arrester. They are exposed to the salt spray and it makes them easier to clean later.
Once off the water I just run the boat on the hose for five minutes to flush the motor and inner cooler. Then a good thorough wash of the boat and trailer and your all done.
Ideally the best thing would be to take the boat to a local lake the next day and dip it. This would more thoroughly flush the trailer. The salt ads a bit more work to the after boating routine but it is worth it every once in a while.

What they did was WD40 the trailer brakes before launching. After bring a hose wash down boat, trailer and hook it up to the motor run it for about 15min. Clean it out

Next time you see the dolphins, slow way down and make a BIG wake. They love to put on a show for you...

Thats Tom Brown taking pics off the back of OC's boat. ;)

I guess it's not that big if a deal then. Do you all run sea strainers, or is it that necessary for an occasional run in the salt water?

I run one for the motor and one for the inner cooler. You would be fine without it. I have never had to clean mine out. Never even seen anything in it.

I don't let not having a sea strainer stop me from taking my boat in the ocean. I would like to do this run next time.
